*UNEDITED* I'm back! Just a quick (and super huge) thank you for all your well wishes for my exams, I read them all and really appreciated it :)
Jett awoke the next morning with her heart racing and her brain unable to remember why.
Her sleep hadn't been dreamless but she was unable to recall what it was exactly that left her with a sick feeling in her stomach and a bitter taste in her mouth. After the previous night's events, she wasn't surprised that her nightmares had been triggered. What had shocked her was the fact that whatever she had dreamed evidently hadn't been that horrible. It was either that or she had finally gotten used to the twisted things her guilty conscience liked to bombard her with.
With a yawn she sat up, rubbing at her eyes as she took in the calmness of the abandoned building. It was oddly soothing waking up in the slight morning chill to the sounds of tree branches rustling and the odd car passing. It was definitely a lot better than being jostled as Jazz tried to slip out of the bed without waking her but instead ended up toppling all over her in her half asleep daze.
Her gaze slid over to Kayden's still sleeping form and for a split second she thought she'd be cruel and just wake him up. Though, the idea was dismissed as soon as it appeared. She had a slight soft spot for the dork who flirted shamelessly with anything that could breathe and insisted in helping on missions despite his lack of experience. She'd never admit it out loud, of course, but she was going to miss him when they left.
The thought brought a slight frown to her lips.
It was that fact that meant that she really couldn't deny that she had an interest in Kayden. Doing so would only result in an unnecessary amount of angst and drama that she didn't have the patience or desire to cater to. Though, that certainly didn't mean that she would entertain the possibility of a long term relationship. She wasn't that particular brand of cruel. If she had learnt one thing in her life time it was that romantic relations never survived her kind of life style.
'Which is precisely why we need to wrap this up and get out of here.'
No matter what happened with Rob, Jett would have to leave and cut all contact with Kayden. It was essential to the Civilian Protection Protocol and trying anything else would mean putting his life in danger. She already had management up her ass asking why she hadn't done her job yet and she was near certain they were beginning to think she had gone soft. Based on Jett's previous stats Rob should have already been dead. The mission was taking a lot longer than any of them had expected and Jett had been putting off acknowledging why.
Waking up beside Kayden, not touching but mere centimetres existing between them was a sensation that she wouldn't mind occurring regularly. Just being in his presence held the same sense of calm that she felt when she was with Jinx and Jazz. And as a result, she realised, she had been subconsciously dragging out the time she spent there. They shouldn't have waited so long after their run in with Rob to make their move. His men shouldn't have gotten the chance to vandalise her car the previous night.
With a sigh, Jett stood and moved herself away from Kayden, instead perching on the edge of the building. Her legs dangled over the side as she stared unseeingly at the landscape before her.
She bit the inside of her cheek as she considered what their next move would be.
First she had to consider what information they already had: They knew with certainty that Robert wasn't residing at the place where he had held the black tie event. Not only had it become a crime scene but the fact that the police hadn't found drugs when they searched the area meant that it had never been a permanent place of residence. She didn't know how he got the place in his possession and, quite frankly, she didn't really care. That was not her area of concern.
What she had cared about was that Jinx, in the middle of the fight that had broken out, noticed that one of Robert's men had his pocket stuffed with tissues. In light of the information, Jinx had balled a tracking device into a tissue and added it to the collection in his pocket as he left the building. She had hoped that in the rush to return to their main base of operations, he wouldn't empty his pockets until they got to Robert's place.
Jett thought it was partly a stroke of genius on Jinx's behalf and partly just dumb luck that it had worked out. They followed the signal on the recon mission the girls took that stormy day and had been led to the exact location of Robert's base of operations. Since then, they had been steadily monitoring Robert as best as they could. They built rough trends on when to expect him to be home and how long for.
They'd use that knowledge in order to come up with a time frame for their attack. Though, they had to figure out a way to deal with the guards and security system to get the upper hand on Robert...
Her eyes widened as she realised what they could do to achieve that. Kayden would hate her for it but they had no other options.
She continued to piece together a rough plan on what they could do until Kayden finally woke up.
"You ready to go?" He asked, voice a little croaky due to just waking up.
She stretched her arms out, satisfied with the amount of planning she had gotten done, before turning back to look at him. "Yeah, guess we better return to civilisation."
Kayden smiled lazily at that, "are you sure you don't want to finish our science experiment from last night?" He questioned before wriggling his brows at her suggestively, "I thought the chemistry was enough to progress into a more biologically based study."
She rolled her eyes at him. She had stopped getting annoyed by the comments and instead had learnt to just brush them off. It did help that she actually did want to kiss him, something which hadn't happened before with the other men she had kissed. Though, she couldn't afford to get distracted. So instead, she stood up and made her way away from the ledge of the building, "I actually have some things I need to take care of."
Kayden raised his eyebrows at that and finally sat up. "Sounds like you've been scheming."
Jett didn't bother to dignify that with a response as she made her way down the fire escape.
After a few seconds passed Kayden followed.
