Kayden woke up next to Jett in the living room.
He'd had trouble sleeping the night before for some reason unknown to him and had sought out her company, knowing that she'd undoubtedly be awake.
(He could have found Jinx as well considering that she could be found up at all hours of the night, hacking into some database or designing a new sort of experiment. Kayden didn't even pretend to be oblivious as to why it was Jett he sought out, despite Jinx undoubtedly being friendlier and closer to his own room.)
The T.V was still on, showing that the movie he had attempted to watch before falling asleep halfway had finished, leaving them with a blank screen and— most likely— a spike in the electrical bill. He lifted his head from where it had been resting against Jett's shoulder, the small lamp she had been using to read remained on, her glasses catching the light from where they had slid down her nose. Some time during the night she had put on the same jumper of his that she had worn after the night of the storm. Which made him realise that she had never given it back. A small part of him was tempted to just let her keep it. There was something almost amusing about the way it swallowed her up, making her appear more childlike. Kayden wasn't even that much taller than her but his shoulders were broader and his physique bulkier which meant that the jumper was still oversized on Jett.
For a moment he watched as her chest rose and fell steadily. Secretly glad that she seemed to have gotten a peaceful night's sleep.
Kayden averted his gaze once he realised that he was staring and instead picked his phone up off of the coffee table, blinking blearily as his eyes adjusted to it's sudden brightness. For a few seconds he just stared at the bright numbers before realising that they'd have to leave in about a minute or so to make it to school on time.
He turned to where Jett remained asleep. Normally she was awake long before him and he almost felt bad about waking her up when she finally seemed to be getting a reasonable length of rest. He was almost tempted to just sleep in, maybe even skip the day. Though, he knew that the school would call his mother and the last thing he needed was an angry phone call from her.
He waited a few seconds before tentatively giving Jett a slight shove. Judging by the way she tensed up at the touch before relaxing slightly let him know that he had successfully caught her attention. She didn't even bother to open her eyes; instead she just groaned and curled up into a tighter ball in the corner of the couch.
He rolled his eyes before muttering, "Jett, we have to go to school." He was still half asleep himself and so the words came out groggily and not too convincingly.
"Go without me," she grumbled.
He stared at her for a long time before a grin spread over his features. "C'mon, Schatzi," He pleaded, knowing that the term of endearment would definitely catch her off guard and motivate her to move— even if it was so she could smack him upside the head.
Jett opened one dark eye and focused it on him, crinkling her nose as she muttered "don't do that."
The distasteful look was all the motivation he needed. "What? You don't like nicknames, schnurzelpurzel?"
Both eyes had opened and she looked at him as if she was going to be sick. Either that or as if she was contemplating punching him in the face. The latter was the more likely. "Can't you wait until after 9 to be a pain in the ass?"
"Come on, schnuckiputzihasimausierdbeertörtchen," He had to get points for at least attempting that. He was almost certain it wasn't actually a word— it was so ridiculous it couldn't be— but his father used to use it when he'd ticked off his mother and wanted her to crack a smile. "It's more fun than you'd think, you should try it."
