The Takaryev boys were nearing the first floor when they heard clamoring footsteps and shouts beyond the vents.
"Dammit," Ravil swore. "Okay, we've got to get out of here now. Come on." He briefly returned to check the map.
"Are you armed?" Artem queried, voice shaking slightly.
"Yes," Ravil replied. "Are you scared?"
"Hell yeah," Artem answered. "Of course I'm scared!"
"You don't need to be." Ravil assured him, crawling to an opening in the vent system, comprised of a small panel that resembled a grid. Ravil peered through the spaces.
"We're on the first floor. Getaway driver is parked outside the window about four yards away. We jump out of the vents and run like hell-" Ravil started.
"I can't run," Artem reminded him.
"Gav'no," Ravil swore again, except in Russian this time. "I'll carry you, then."
Ravil opened the panel, grabbed his computer bag, and jumped down into the first floor. "Okay, jump. I'll catch you."
Artem peered down at Ravil and took a deep breath, then jumped. A wave of relief swept over him as he felt Ravil's arms holding him up.
Ravil pivoted glancing down the hallway in which they'd landed. "Okay. Gonna run like hell now."
Ravil spotted the getaway car and darted towards it, jumping through a window in a shower of glass shards. His feet his the pavement, and he threw open the car door and lifted Artem into the vehicle, then followed and sat down, shutting the door.
Adrenaline ballooned up to his head, and Ravil shouted at the man in the front seat. "Drive! Go!"
"Sheesh," Leopold turned around to look at him. He removed his gaze and hit the gas, and once they were a safe distance from Lubyanka, Ravil began to explain to Artem what all had happened during his absence.
