The comm link in Dimitri's ear buzzed to life.
"Sergeant Bocharov." It was Emelyan's voice.
"Yes, sir?" Dimitri replied, ducking instinctively as another spasm of fire from the fighter jets split the air.
"Your presence is requested at the Alexandrov blacksite- the one where Ravil Takaryev was being held," Emelyan answered. "You have my permission to leave the battlefield."
. . .
Dimitri scanned his FSB ID card and stepped into the blacksite elevator, descending silently to the basement, where he found a glass wall separating him from the other half of the room. The elevator doors hissed open and he walked out, stopping short as he recognized Ivan.
Beyond the glass wall, Ivan was tied to a chair, blood smeared on his pale face and through his blond hair. His blue eyes stared at Dimitri with a look of pain and pleading.
A young man with dark hair and brown eyes stepped out of the shadows. "Hello, Sergeant Bocharov. It's a pleasure seeing you."
