Emelyan Alexandrov called the Kremlin later that day. Ravil was asleep, so Artem took the call himself.

"Privyet. Can I help you?" Artem asked, unamused and trying not to let his voice betray his fear.

"Emelyan Alexandrov speaking. I know your husband is responsible for the death of my father," came the reply.

"Tell me something I don't know," Artem snarled. "And in any case, what do you plan to do?"

"I will surround the Kremlin with my soldiers," Emelyan started, "until Ravil walks out front so I can have him shot, just like he shot my father."

"Good luck," Artem said. "Not only will you have to get through the FSO, you'll also have to shoot me first."

"It'd be a pleasure, Prime Minister." Emelyan's laugh was cold. "I'd love to rid the world of all of your kind. Otvrateetelnih,"

"How sad it must be," Artem retorted, "never to have loved or to have been loved. Try me, Emelyan Alexandrov. You will not make it out of the Kremlin's vicinity alive on my watch."

"Make me believe it." And with that, Emelyan ended the call.

Artem thought of Ravil as he put down the phone.

I will make sure no one lays a hand on you, my love.
