The funeral was held in the same church as Alina's had been. Artem sat on the first pew, bracing himself for the moment when he'd have to give the eulogy.

His blue eyes held no passion as he observed the crowds of people who had also attended the funeral. He didn't bother to get up and peer into Ravil's casket. He knew that Ravil had been much more than a body. No husk in a casket could convey that.

Artem stayed put. Condolences from various governmental figures whose faces he didn't recognize were nothing but shallow formalities.

He contemplated bitterly the cruelty of the world he called home. First Alina, then Ravil. And by suicide, too.

Artem blinked back tears. He was living his worst nightmare. He had failed. Ravil was dead, and there was no way to bring him back.
