Thaddeus and Isaac were treating themselves to a celebratory dinner after having successfully set up their new computer network in full.
They toasted with glasses of lemonade, they toasted to the victory of their years-in-the-making electronic masterpiece.
. . .
It was about three in the morning when Thaddeus was roused from his sleep by a weary Isaac.
"What is it?" Thaddeus sat up in bed.
"My stomach hurts," Isaac replied, pain contorting his blue gaze.
"There's medicine in the kitchen, you know-" Thaddeus began.
"Tried it already. It's been an hour," Isaac's voice cracked. "It's only gotten worse."
. . .
They'd gone to the hospital. The doctors did what they could, but still didn't have much of an idea of what could've been wrong with Isaac. Thaddeus could only watch, with the demon of tormenting helplessness hovering in a cloud around him, as the doctors put Isaac through test after test, scan after scan.
By the time morning arrived to greet them with a dazzling sunrise, Thaddeus had already heard those four cursed words. Already been told, "He didn't make it."
Isaac was dead.
Thaddeus was, well, alone.
