When I went to school on Tuesday I saw that Tracy, Glenn, and three other students were switched to a different English period. That really sucks. I was already having a crappy day and that just added to the crappiness. I could always sees Tracy after school or during lunch. But what if I don't get to see him anymore?
I'm acting really stupid. Here I am, feeling all bummed and he probably doesn't give me a second thought. Maybe he even has a girlfriend. That thought just bummed me out even more.
It's Friday now and I still haven't seen Glenn. I go to the school cafeteria and eat with Tracy, Noah, and Beth.
"Hey, Beth we should go to the theaters after school to watch that new Captain America movie. We could take the bus." Noah says.
"Oh, I would but I don't have any money." Beth says sadly.
"That's ok, I am going to pay for it."
"Oh ok, I'd love to." Beth says. Then she gives him such a big smile. I don't know why they don't just make it official and become a couple.
"See, Maggie? Beth has a date. Why don't you ask that cute guy Glenn to go on a date with you. He said he likes your pretty eyes." Tracy teases.
"Oh my God. Just eat your burger and be quiet." I say.
"Who is Glenn?" Beth asks.
"Just this cute guy who was in her English class and totally likes her." Tracy answers.
"You don't know that." I mumble as I eat my french fries.
After school, me and Tracy go to the school basketball game. The game ended early, but I don't want to go home yet. Tracy has to leave to go to her dancing class, so I decide to kill time and walk to the park. Since Beth is going out with Noah, there's no reason to go home yet. She'll be ok. I'm glad she can go out and not have to worry about getting in trouble. My mom and Shane tend to leave her alone. I'm more than happy to be the one they pick on. As long as she can be happy.
And then I see him. He's sitting down by the lake watching something on his tablet, he has earphones on. I don't know if I should go up to him. But I really want to. My feet begin to start walking towards him. He's like a magnet.
I walk up behind him and take off his baseball cap, revealing his beautiful black hair. He turns around and sees me. He looks bewildered at first but then he smiles and says, "Maggie?"
"Happy to see you haven't lost this again." I say, and I put the hat back on his head. I sit by him.
"It's nice to see you again. After they switched my English class, I wasn't sure." Glenn says, pausing whatever it was he was watching and taking off his earphones.
My heart does a little flip because he DID think about me.
"Yeah, it's nice to see you, too." I say.
He smiles again and it's like looking into the sun. It's like brightness radiates from him. From the inside to the outside. Warming anything cold that lives inside me.
"This is the first time I've come here. I always pass this place when I'm walking home but I've never actually took the time to come see it." I say.
"Yeah, I was driving home when I saw the park sign and I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did." He says.
I smile and look at the lake. The ducks look content to be in the water, just floating there. There's nothing but the sound of pure nature. I don't remember the last time I felt so at peace. So safe. I wish I could lock myself into this moment.
"It's so beautiful." I say
"Yeah, it is. It's so hot out here today, I wish I could just jump in the water."
"Me, too." I say.
"Dale, he's my adoptive father, and I used to go to this lake in Michigan to fish. But that lake was way smaller than this one." Glenn says.
"Do you miss Michigan?"
"Sometimes. But I think I'm liking it here more each day." He says.
"I like it here, but I wish I could go on a trip. Just to see a different place."
"Like where?" Glenn asks.
"Italy. I want to see Rome. Or New York."
"I'd love to see those places, too. Maybe someday." He says.
"So, what are were you watching? Sorry I interrupted you." I ask.
"Oh no, it's fine. I was just watching Game of Thrones. I'm on season 1 episode 7 and I'm hooked." He says.
"I watch that show, too. I'm all caught up already. Whose your favorite character so far?" I say.
"Ned Stark, he's so badass. I hope he becomes the leader of Westeros." He says.
I bite my lip, because I don't want to laugh. Poor thing doesn't know Ned Stark is going to get beheaded soon.
"Who is your favorite character?" He asks.
"Tyrion Lannister. I can relate to him so much, you know." I say.
"Oh yeah, he's really awesome. It's cool that you watch this show." He says, looking at me.
"Yeah, I'm kind of weird."
"That's not what I would call it." He says.
I smile and look at the lake again. It's starting to get dark. I don't want to leave.
"I should get going. It's getting late." I say regretfully, standing up.
"Yeah, me too." Glenn says. He grabs his tablet and gets up.
"Goodbye, it was nice talking to you." I say, smiling.
"Hey, do you want a ride home? I just want to make sure you get home safe."
I try to think if my mom or Shane would be home. They can't really do anything, right? It's not like if Glenn will actually come inside the house, he'll just drop me off and leave. He'll be gone before they even notice.
"Um. Sure. Thanks, Glenn." I say, hoping that I'm not blushing.
He smiles and says, "No problem. Follow me, my car isn't parked far."
A few minutes later we are in his car, driving on the road. I tell him the directions to my house. We get there in only 10 minutes.
"Bye, Glenn. Thanks again." I say. I take off my seat belt.
"Anytime." He says.
I get off the car and walk to the front door of my house. I expect Glenn to drive off already, but I think he's waiting until I actually open the door and go inside. I wave goodbye and he waves back. Then I go inside the house. I can hear him drive away.
Shane and my mom are arguing about something in the kitchen. They don't even hear me come in. Beth's bedroom door is open, so I knock and stand at the doorway to make sure she's fine. She is on her bed drawing a picture. Drawing has always been a passion of hers. She's really good at it, too.
"Hi, did you have fun at the movies with Noah?" I ask.
"Yeah, it was so much fun." She says, smiling.
"That's good." I say, walking in her room all the way and shutting her door. I sit on her bed with her.
"Yeah. I had a really good day. I like him a lot. More than a lot." She says.
"I know." I say.
"I wish I could tell mom. You know like a normal mom and daughter would talk." She says sadly.
"Oh, Beth. I know. But don't let that ruin this for you. And you know you can tell me anything." I say.
"I know. And thanks, Maggie. For being there for me."
"What are sisters for?" I say, ruffling the hair on top of her head.
"Where were you, by the way?" She asks me.
"Oh, I was just at the park." I say.
"All alone?"
"I was at first, but then I ran into Glenn." I say, looking down.
"Oh. Is he nice?" She asks.
"Yeah, really nice." I say, smiling.
"Do you like him?" Beth asks.
"Yeah, I do. I think he likes me, too."
