Maia's POV

The bite of the chilly November air pinched the nerves in my fingertips. I looked out at the small pond my friends and I found, silently observing the ripples.

I might have worn a jacket, but it was still cold...

I brought a hoodie with me, but I did not wear it.

My jacket was sufficient for me, but my ears suffered badly...

Occasionally, I'd press against them, feeling and hearing the crack of my ears. It was satisfying.

As well as Chaot's death.

I gritted my teeth, my jaws aching from the bitter cold. Every few minutes, my thoughts would shift to Chaot.

I hated that woman.

First, she had killed Cyclone's older sister and Eon's little brother a year before. The two seemed over the death, but I could feel a dark presence thriving within them every time I was near either of them. They were really trying to cope.

My sister on the other hand...

She had changed.

Usually, Nightingale was positive, happy, and confident.

The last time I had seen her, all she was was a shadow of her former self, a bottle of alcohol always in her hand. She had terrible bags under her eyes, she was skinnier than I ever was, and everything seemed wrong.

When our eyes met, there were about ten seconds of utter shock. Then, she began pacing.

She muttered to herself over and over...

"I'm dreaming... but it feels real... am I going insane?"

Still, we hugged.

She'd taken my existence much better than I expected.

She was definitely happy, but of course, there was confusion and all.

I was scared to break the news that I'd have to leave again. Thankfully, she didn't take it that seriously. I was able to calm her down and help her understand that everything will be okay, that I'd be home soon and that our lives will be completely happy.

But that was around a year ago.

Yet it seemed like only yesterday I had been slapping hands with other Grade 8 students...

Now, I was sixteen.

My life had flipped completely since the park.

Chaot was putting the world in danger.

I absolutely hated that woman.

All Chaot seemed to do was hate, hate, hate.

For some reason, I wanted the old Chaot back, the one that joked and laughed all the time.

Now, she was more evil than I ever thought she could be.

Still, I watched every ripple in the pond as the wind blew over it. Everything was so serene.

But that would change soon...

"Hey, Maia," a voice sounded from behind me.

I turned around and saw Blackout walking toward me.

"How are you doing?"

I sighed.

"Still alive. You?"

Blackout sat down next to me.

Now, her voice sounded very deep and gruff for a girl, as if she was a boy, especially after she turned fourteen.
