Chapter 34: Darkness You Once Had

Maia's POV

Two more to save...

Our surroundings brightened up in a very harsh light, and once it faded, Mikaela was no longer there.

There stood a boy. He wore a white robe with golden trimmings. Balls of light floated all around him. He had white dragon wings on his back. His face was completely engulfed by light.

The doubtful soul appeared.

"I must stop the likes of you."

You reminded him of his past conflict with Blackout, which eventually turned into love. He's really not amused...

He summoned several -- no, hundreds of hard-light spears all around him. He threw them at me, all while lots of tendrils shot up from the ground and advanced toward me. Those tendrils were in a very tight but wide formation, which made it hard to go around them, so I resorted to flying over them. But the tendrils greatly varied in height, which made it hard for me, considering the fact that lots of spears were flying at me. I ended up with a few scratches because of that.

"Then they all will."

You teased him about his concern for two certain people... he's clearly embarrassed...

He conjured up at least twenty more copies of himself, and they all started shooting beams at me with the orbs of light around them. I was overwhelmed by their combined power and I earned quite a lot of wounds...

"How did I take a liking to someone like you?"

You assured him that their sacrifice wouldn't be in vain. He wants to smile...

The light engulfing his face faded away, revealing a bright smile.

"I know. That's your nature, isn't it? I could not doubt you, for you're my friend," Spotlight told me.

He disappeared in a flash of light, and Mikaela reappeared.

The whole area suddenly descended into darkness, taking Mikaela with it. A new figure emerged from the dark depths. For some reason, I could see certain features clearly, despite the absolute darkness.

I could make out a girl. She wore a dark gray hoodie that was tattered around the bottom, black pants with white stripes along the sides, and pink slippers. Her face was completely engulfed in darkness.

The insane soul appeared.

"Just give up. I did."

You cracked the funniest joke you could think of. She seems to like it...

The whole area was silent, save for a buzzing sound that came from all directions. I immediately soared upwards, as though I knew what would happen. Right after that, I saw four black beams that converged on where I was...

For some reason, it reminded me of the simulations when I was Grade 8...

"Why even try?"

You teased her about her reputation as the girl who fell for many girls. She isn't very amused...

My body felt heavy all of a sudden, and my wings were locked in place, which meant I couldn't fly...

Why do I have a bad feeling I know what she's going to do next...?

I saw glowing platforms move around me, and I heard buzzing sounds as well.

Wait...

The buzzing came from directly in front of me.

I reflexively jumped onto the nearest platform before the beam fired at me. I kept repeating that pattern for a few times...

"You'll never see them again."

You told her that you realized the consequences of your actions, and that you take full responsibility for it. She tries to think of why you told her that...

The darkness was lifted, which allowed me to see her face clearly. As usual, she had black sclera and white slits for eyes... but the aura they gave off was more calming than scary this time.

"Nah, I'm rooting for you," Blackout nonchalantly said.

Our surroundings were enveloped in darkness, and Blackout disappeared, only for Mikaela to take her place.

To my surprise, I heard Mikaela whisper something.

"Huh? What are you doing...?"
