Blackout's POV

The landing from the portal was... smoother than usual.

Most of the time, it was "smashing into the ground." But this time, I managed to land on my feet, albeit roughly. My legs buckled under me, but I rolled out and sprang up to my feet.

The other girls were able to pull off a smooth landing, but the boys weren't as lucky.

Once Maia emerged, she flapped her wings and hovered in the air, and she landed softly on the grass, which was a crusty yellow.

The area looked different. Most of the trees were sans leaves, and I felt something dark in the playground.

Maybe it was just me...

Of course, the most drastic difference was the grass.

Two and a half years ago, it was a lively green.

Now, it seemed like a forest full of dead trees.

I felt the ghost of their prickly ends all across my back.

"She's here?" Maia asked.

Eon nodded sharply.

"Yep. I do not know where exactly, but she's definitely somewhere under the trees."

"We need to hurry," Feliz cut in.

"Every second wasted is a second that girl could die."

I didn't know what to expect.

When we would find Mae, what would the young girl look like?

Eon had described Mae to us, but that was insufficient. I had quite the grotesque image in my mind, but that was a mere brushstroke.

"Alright," Arcmagos said.

"Blackout, Spotlight, Cyclone, Pyroclast, and I could use our powers to make a crater in the ground. In that crater, we might find the cell."

"Wouldn't that be damage to city-owned property or something?" Rocksworth cut in.

"Please," Pyroclast said in an exaggerated tone.

"We have much more to worry about than damaging city property."

Rocksworth hesitantly conceded and turned around.

"Well then, let's get started," the ones Arcmagos mentioned, myself included, began walking briskly toward him.

Then, something triggered in my head.

A pump of adrenaline, perhaps?

No.

A signal.

A warning.

My eyes instantly went to Rocksworth, more like where her feet were. I noticed a small patch of uprooted soil on the ground...

Why would that be...?

A word flashed in my mind.

Landmine.

"ROCKSWORTH, WHERE ARE YOU GOING?! STOP!" I screamed.

I conjured a black ball of energy and launched it at the small patch of soil.

Rocksworth stared with shock and stepped back as the ball zipped through the air and in a split second, it made contact with the patch of dirt--

BOOM!

Orange flames erupted on the spot. Rocksworth screamed as she was thrown back through the air like a rag doll. Thankfully, she was able to regain her footing, due to a platform of soil she uprooted.
