Blackout's POV
I'm a murderer.
No, she was suffering.
But I killed her.
No, I did not.
Yes, I did.
No...
No.
NO!
"AHHH!!!!" I jolted awake in a sweat, my scream echoing off of the walls around me.
Silence.
I decided to take in the surroundings.
I remembered Chaot's voice telling us that we'd be taken somewhere familiar, and as far as I was concerned, it definitely was.
The walls and floor were made of steel, a large metal door in front of the room. One light bulb flickered faintly from the ceiling. I was in the corner of the room.
With a sigh, I blinked and moved my arm, trying to push myself off of the ground. A sharp pain passed through the crease of my elbow. My skin had reddened slightly.
I pushed myself up a little, resisting the pain with every movement I made. I finally stood up, staring at the door.
I just want to talk to...
Darkness.
"Darkness," I whispered.
"Come out, please."
A small voice whispered in my head.
"Sure. I've been wanting to talk to you for a while, anyway."
The little strength I had was completely gone the moment Darkness suddenly pulled out of me and floated in front of me.
I felt woozy as I fell against the wall behind me, sliding down to the ground.
"Hi, Blackout," the spirit said.
For some odd reason, she still looked the same as when I had first met her.
Maybe spirits don't age...
"Listen, there are some things you need to know about us Enigmas... or maybe spirits."
"What are they? Guess I'll need to know."
Darkness warmly smiled.
"Chaot has many spirits within her, now. I know those three, Marco, Colin, and Bern, told you the story about that. But among them is Mae's spirit. Chaot was able to manipulate Mae to become a part of her. She is trapped, and I don't think they'll be able to break free unless Chaot lets them."
"You mean..." I swallowed.
"Mae's being forced against her will?"
"Yeah," Darkness solemnly replied.
"And I honestly don't believe we could persuade Chaot to let Mae and the rest out. Not even if we knocked some sense into her. It had happened before."
Memories of Forestra suddenly flooded into my mind.
I began trembling as I pondered the reason why she was dead.
Chaot did the hurting, but it was Arcmagos and me who killed her.
But the only reason I could participate was because of... of...
Darkness.
Anger bubbled up into an explosion.
"YOU'RE THE ONE WHO KILLED FOREST!" I screamed.
I jumped to my feet, adrenaline flooding my body.
"YOU'RE THE REASON SHE IS DEAD! I MAY HAVE USED YOUR POWERS, BUT YOU'RE THE REASON THEY'RE THERE! YOU'RE THE REASON CHAOT WAS COMING AFTER US! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO CAUSED MY BEST FRIEND FOREST'S DEATH!"
I clenched my fist, hearing them pop a bit.
"GET OUT OF MY SIGHT, YOU FUCKER! YOU MURDERED MY FRIEND! CHAOT DID THE RIGHT THING KILLING YOU, SO GET OUT! NOW!"
Tears poured out of my eyes, dropping down like blinds and dripping down to the floor. I looked at the creature's face, expecting not to see her. I was ready to regret and take back everything I had said, but she was still there.
"I-- I'm so sorry, Darkness," I whimpered.
"I lost it after what happened..."
Darkness's face was solemn.
"Forestra sure was a great girl... tell you what."
Her eye-lights started glowing a bit brighter.
"She was my first kiss with someone who wasn't originally my brother."
My own eyes widened.
I hadn't thought of my kiss that way.
Maybe that was Growth's first kiss as well... oh, wait.
"I guess..." I gulped.
"Did you love her?"
"More as a friend. About the brother part, I'll tell you something else. You know the only boy whom you have fallen for? His spirit is my brother."
"What!?"
I was shocked.
"Don't dwell on it too much, Blackout."
"I'm not sad because of the mean things you said. I am sad because I remember a brave, strong young lady who was kind. I remember watching her save Maia from that tidal wave. I remember telling her jokes through the door in Delta. But watching her die broke my heart."
Darkness laughed.
"Maybe when all of this is over, I'll get to see them again.
"Yeah, I--"
"Shh!" Darkness suddenly hissed.
I kept quiet.
I could hear slow footsteps from down the hall. They were soft, but deliberate.
Chaot.
Her monsters.
They were coming.
"Darkness!" I whispered.
Immediately, Darkness flew into me, knocking me into the wall again. I fell to my knees, my heart pounding as I sat there, silently.
The footsteps got louder - louder to the point that they eventually stopped right outside the door.
I froze, my heart pounding harder than ever. Then, the door slid upward, revealing a purple-black wraith in the doorway. Thankfully, no Chaot.
"Blackout," the wraith said in a very deep voice.
"I am here to tell you that you are to be executed this afternoon. We will bring you to the stage, and you are to follow instructions from Mistress Chaot from there. Be ready for when that time comes. Thank you, and good day."
The wraith turned around and exited through the door.
I shook as I took everything into account.
Chaot had won this time.
