Rocksworth's POV

Mae requested that we all go to her house to take a break from all the chaos, so we agreed to bring her home.

Frankly, I felt strange seeing Mae like this. She looked as if every last ounce of innocence had been sucked out of her, and that wasn't far from the truth. Her green eyes had gone grey and were much more sunken than they ever were. Her skin was very pale and tightly strung against her bones, making her look like a living skeleton with skin, clothes, and long, stringy hair.

"I'll make a portal to your house, Mae," Feliz said in a mellow voice.

She put her hands out and the air ripped open, creating a portal.

This one looked different from every other one I had seen thus far. This wasn't empty or colorless. I could see a playground, like the type I'd find in people's backyards.

Mae's eyes widened.

"My... my house!" she rasped.

"My playground! My balloons! Take me in there! Hurry!"

I watched as Maia carried her into the rift, stepping in and onto the crispy, green grass. We followed suit.

Mae was practically wiggling out of Maia's grasp, eager to finally be home. Eon rushed up to keep her secure, knowing full well that the girl was too weak to be walking around.

I also approached silently, my eyes tearing up for two reasons.

One, the innocent young girl we came to know was finally back. Two, the innocent girl we once knew was completely beaten and bruised. I was happy and scared and sad and furious all at once. I sucked in a breath and let all of my emotions out with an exhale.

My eyes turned to Mae.

"Mae, shh..." I pacified.

The girl instantly fell limp in Maia's arms, her head lolling back so she could see me.

"Rocksworth..."

She squirmed and landed sprawled on the ground. She scrambled to her feet and jumped up to me, throwing her arms around me and rasping a sob.

"Mae... you're finally home!" I whispered.

She looked at me, her eyes glistening with hope.

"Can you take me inside?"

I nodded.

"Sure."

I put Mae into a plain white shirt and black shorts, slipping gray shoes onto her feet, fixing her hair up in the process.

She limped to the other side of the room, where there was a bunch of balloons taped to the wall. She grasped one in a pale fist and grinned widely.

"Balloons!" she squealed.

I chuckled and took her downstairs.

Her house was really nice. It had two stories and a big spiral staircase. The kitchen was also nice. The sink was a glimmering silver, with handles for hot and cold water. The refrigerator was a pure white. Black cupboards lined every inch of the kitchen, barring the other kitchen appliances. So far, the parts of Mae's house I had visited were her room and the kitchen.

"You should go outside while I prepare food for us all," Mae requested.

I looked at her, perplexed.

"You've been locked in a giant metal box of a cell for the past year, and the first thing you want to do is cook? Shouldn't we, I don't know, maybe get food from the fridge or something?"
