Our Little Plot
Chapter 38
Maui's POV
That evening...
I made all of us some hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner and smores for dessert. Gramma Tala, Moana, and I are eating over the camp fire. It's really nice to have this quality time as a group. I never got to experience this when I was a child because of you know, being abandoned and all. Moana is truly lucky to have Gramma Tala. I always wanted a grandmother. Finally having the grandmother like figure in my life is going to be nice. Speaking of Gramma Tala, I actually want to pull her aside and talk to her for a few minutes. I tap her on the shoulder. "Gramma Tala, can I steal you for a few minutes?" She smiles and nods. I kiss Moana on the cheek and tell her we'll be right back.
I lead us out of earshot from Moana, but close enough where she's in viewing distance. "So what would you like to talk to me about Maui? I can tell by your stature and the look on your face that it's pretty important." A nervous laugh escapes from my mouth. "Well that it is. Anyways, you and I both know how much Moana's been through the past two months. She lost everything yet found herself on the journey. Two months ago, I was probably the most evil demigod there was and thanks to your granddaughter, I'm a becoming a better man. Her strength inspires to continue to fight, even when I feel like giving up. I had a major setback a couple of weeks ago and scared the living daylight out of Moana. She found me lying in a pool of my own blood because I was selfish enough to harm myself in order to escape my problems. I still hate myself for doing it and will for a long time."
Gramma Tala puts a hand on my shoulder. "Just because you had one setback, it doesn't have to define you forever. Maui, like I said before, you've come so far. I know how tempting it is to give into the darkness, I've given in it many times myself. It took me awhile to learn from my mistakes myself, but I never let them define me. You're a good man Maui and you make my Moana the happiest I've ever seen her. Her father constantly tried to throw the concept of arranged marriage down her throat. Her mother and I never supported that idea, especially me given how vocal I can be." I raise an eyebrow. "That's funny given how Moana was shunned by BOTH of her own parents." Gramma Tala sighs. "I'm ashamed of what they've become Maui. I swear to you I never raised my son to act the way he is now. I like to think that one day they'll come around, but I highly doubt it."
As soon as she says that, an idea pops into my head. "Gramma Tala." She interrupts me. "Please, just call me Tala. Now that I'm immortal, there's no reason to make me feel so old." I laugh. "Tala, I have an idea. It may seem stupid though." "No idea is stupid Maui. Tell me." A sly grin forms on my face. "Let's go back to Montonui and give them a bit of a heart attack as well try one last time to get them to come around." She grins back. "Let's do it, though I'm not sure we should tell Moana." I frown a bit. "How come? I know that this is still a fresh wound for her, but it might be good for her to confront them. Plus there's something I really want to do in front of them, with your blessing of course." Her face lights up. "I know exactly what you're planning and I absolutely give you my blessing to do so Maui. Besides, a little birdy told me that they adjusted the marriage laws in Montonui so marriage is legal at the age of seventeen. Since we're all immortal though, it doesn't really matter what age you get married. They've had awhile to process you and Moana's relationship. I'd like to have a little hope that at least one of them has changed their views on it. If not, then we'll rub it in their faces and never look back. Does that sound like a plan Maui?" She reaches out a hand for me to shake and I do. "Sounds like a plan Tala."
"So Tala, when should we break the news and when do you want to head to Montonui?" She ponders my question for a minute. "We'll tell her tomorrow and head out in three days time." I nod in agreement and we make our way back to Moana, careful not to reveal what Tala and I talked about to her just yet.
