Anxiety Creeps Up Once Again
Chapter 39
Gramma Tala's POV
The next morning...
Maui and I agreed last night to wake up around the same time, that being ten in the morning, which it is about to be right now. We wanted to quickly rehearse how we were going to break the news to Moana. We manage to get a couple run throughs in before she wanders into the kitchen. I greet her with a hug and Maui greets her with both a hug in a kiss. I try not to stare at their display of affection. I know that though they enjoy me being around now, they also want their privacy from time to time. That's why I wanted to give them a couple of days alone before we head out on our voyage. Their privacy will be limited during the days of travel.
"Listen Moana, before we eat breakfast, there's something Maui and I need to talk to you about." She looks at us with intense curiousity and motions for us to start talking. I look to Maui and his eyes plead for me to be the one to begin this discussion. "Maui and I were talking last night and we wanted to go back to Montonui for a little visit. Moana's eyes bug out of her head and she chokes on her water. Maui pats her back gently. "Gramma, you must be joking. You do know what happened last time when Maui and I went back there. We were banished. If Maui and I even set foot on the shore of Montonui, there could be dire consequences. Plus, I can't face my parents. I'm a disgrace to them." I cup her chin and get her to look me in the eyes. "Moana, Maui and I want to get back at them for treating like they have. Plus, I'd like to give a little scare in the hopes of possibly getting them to come around. Just allow us to try one more time. If the results are the same as last time, then I promise we won't press the matter again."
I can see the hesitation in Moana's demeanor. I look to Maui to help talk me through the rest of this. I leave the room so they can finish talking in private.
Moana's POV
I try my hardest not to break down, but my anxiety gets the best of me and I do. I fall to the floor in Maui's arms and cry. "I look up at Maui pleadingly. "Maui, I'm scared. I don't know if I can face my parents again. I don't want to hear them say how much of a disgrace I am and how they don't love me anymore. The first time was horrible enough. I would never force you to face your parents who abandoned you if they were still alive." I can see the guilt spread across Maui's face. As much as I love him, I'm really upset that he would make me face that again after only just starting to overcome that obstacle. I finally started to accept that my parents will never accept me for who I am and will never accept my relationship with the man I love."
It's rare to see Maui speechless, but he is. He's trying to open up his mouth to speak, but the words won't come out. So I take advantage of the silence and get in a few choice words. "I know you and Gramma Tala are trying to reunite my family and while I appreciate the kindness behind the gesture, I'm not sure it's something I want to be a part of. I'll give you both a final answer tomorrow. But for now, I just need some alone to think." With that being side, I push myself out of Maui's arms and head back into the house. I don't even bother to look back and see the despair on Maui's face.
