Getting Insight About Maui
Chapter 3
Moana's POV
We left the island two hours ago and Maui has been bugging me to say that his song was better. I kept saying no to bug him back but eventually I caved and agreed. I man the dude can really rap. His vocals though need a bit of work.
One thing that's been floating around in the back of my mind is how little I know about Maui other than what I've heard from the legends and a personality analysis. For example, I know he's a pain, is cocky, full of himself, and misguided. It's going to take another few days before we have to deal with the demon that Tahiti has become due to not having her heart. I'd like to get to know Maui.
Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Maui sitting at the edge of the boat. He looks deep in thought and keeps scratching his head. I head over to him and sit next to him, not right on top of him though. "Is everything okay Maui?" He smirks. "Why wouldn't I be okay? I look fabulous and I have my hook and powers back. I couldn't be better. I'm just sitting because I'm tired. No need to be so dramatic." I roll my eyes. "If anything, you're the one being dramatic. I was just asking a simple question." He snorts. "And I answered it so you're welcome." "Now I have a real question, why are you always pompous? Just because you're a demigod doesn't mean that you're better than myself or anyone else."
He sighs. "It's a defense mechanism. I try to appear tough because of my horrible past." I begin to feel slightly sympathetic. "I know you and I don't really get along all the time, but you can tell me. I don't judge people on their pasts. I only judge them on how they treat others and myself." He swats my concern away. "You don't want to hear my sob story." I move a little closer to him. "Actually I would. It's always interesting to see how one's past shapes into the person they've become."
"Alright I'll tell you. I wasn't always a demigod. I was a mortal until I was about your age now. I'm assuming you're 16." "You're correct. I'm 16." "I had to work for my powers. I know I don't seem like a hard worker, but I swear I was, at least back then." "Maui, how can a mortal become a demigod to begin with?" He winces at my question. "I was adopted of sorts. My mortal parents raised for me a few years until one day they just decided they didn't want me anymore. I was never good enough in their eyes. I was a ugly little thing with no friends, talent, and a lot of issues. The gods were the ones that guided me through spiritual acts from time to time and gave me powers when they thought I was fit to have them. They told me that I would need them to survive the cruelty of the world. Boy where they right about that. But with all that being said, I'm really sorry for being such a jerk to you on this voyage so far. Plus you saved me back there from getting eaten by that dumb crab."
I stare at him in amazement. This is the first time I've seen and heard Maui express his emotions. "It's okay Maui. I've let it go. Thank you though for opening up to me. All I've wanted out of this journey was to get to know you a bit more and now you've helped me shed light on who you are. I won't ask you anymore questions right now. I know that what you said was hard enough to talk about." He begins to cheer up. "Actually I wouldn't mind you asking me some questions. We have plenty of time to kill."
I dive in full force and ask him about his hobbies, favorite animals/things/people to shapeshift into, and if he's ever found love. The question about him finding love causes him to start feeling down again. "I don't allow myself to have romantic feelings for any girls. Being a demigod in a relationship has it's price. Although I have immortality, the girl I'd be vying for would most likely be a mortal. I couldn't bear to love someone unconditionally and then having the universe take them away from me at some unpredictable moment due to death."
"Wow I wasn't expecting that deep of a response. I may only be 16 and barely know what love is, but I think you'll find that special girl someday. Just don't let your ego get the best of you. Besides that, you're honestly a good person deep down. Sure you have flaws but we all do." "Moana, I really think I misjudged you. You may be a pain at times but honestly you're not so bad." I smile. "Thank you Maui. I'm going to rest for a bit if that's okay." "That's fine. I'd like to have a bit of time to myself to think." I go back to my corner of the ship and fall asleep to the rhythm of the waves pattering against the boat.
