Lucifer and Dean continue chatting for a long time, and the subject eventually shifts to other things. I love how they no longer hate each other just because Lucifer referenced a song Dean likes. This is what fandoms do. They unite people who otherwise would never even try to be friends.
Finally, everyone decides to turn in for the night. It's pretty late, but no one minds. We could stay up all night if we felt like it. Hell, the angels and demons already do. Unfortunately, I'm neither of them, so I do require at least a little shuteye.Third Person POV
"Hey, Gabe," Lucifer says after a long time of silence.
The only ones remaining in the living room are the four angels. Jesse took Macie to one of the bedrooms after she calmed down a bit. She's still not speaking, but at least she's stopped crying. Janus somehow slipped out at some point, but whether he remains in the building, no one knows. Crowley disappeared to God knows where, and, seeing as this is Supernatural Crowley, no one knows if he's planning on coming back. It's likely he'll return when he realizes that he has no power in this world and the only people he knows are at the bunker. Of course, he isn't too close with anyone in the bunker, so he may decide against staying here. It could go either way on that one.
"Yeah?" Gabriel replies, glancing up from his phone. He's been playing Slither.io for the five hours or so, and he's getting really sick of it. Any break from it would be nice.
"Can I have my blade back now? I meant to ask earlier," Lucifer says.
"Why?" Gabriel asks quickly.
"Because I like having my blade on me," Lucifer replies. "It's like a security blanket, but more badass."
Gabriel glances at Michael, unsure whether to give it up or not. Michael gives him a slight nod, barely perceptible even with his angelic eyesight. Gabriel pulls Lucifer's blade out of his jacket pocket and hands it to the angel.
"Thanks," Lucifer says, taking it and putting it in his pocket because boys' pants have huge pockets. He returns to his own phone, playing Piano Tiles and doing better every time. It must be his angelic reflexes or something. Whatever it is, this game is way too easy.
"You and Dean seem to be getting long pretty well," Gabriel observes.
Lucifer shrugs, not looking up from his game.
"I definitely wasn't expecting that," Gabriel adds.
"Neither way I," Lucifer agrees.
They lapse into silence again, which is their usual nighttime routine. They generally take their nights to talk about anything that's on their minds, usually due to the other angel(s) forcefully withdrawing the information by constant pestering. But, of course, they don't always have something to talk about. After all, Gabriel and Lucifer have basically been together 24/7/365 for the last seven years, so they're pretty used to running out of things to discuss. Michael seems to have picked up on that quality pretty quickly as well, which helps make their silence not awkward.
Unfortunately, this time, it is awkward. Lucifer can sense a change, and he can tell exactly where it's from, though not why.
"You've been wanting to say something for hours and you haven't yet," Lucifer observes with a glance at his eldest brother. "I'm guessing it's something neither of us want to talk about, so whatever it is, how about we don't talk about it?"
"Unfortunately I think we have to talk about it," Michael replies.
Lucifer groans. "Fine. What are we talking about?"
"Gabriel told me what happened earlier today with your blade."
"That's what this is about?" Lucifer repeats in surprise. He shouldn't be surprised, seeing as nothing else has happened lately, but he is. "I appreciate your concern and all, but that was nothing. I'm fine. Everything is fine."
"So you weren't going to...?" Michael asks.
"Kill myself?" Lucifer finishes. "No, I wasn't."
"Then what was going on with you?" Gabriel asks.
Lucifer shrugs. "Just a bit of a mental breakdown, I guess. I'm fine now, though. Really."
"Are you sure?" Gabriel asks.
Lucifer nods. "Yep. Seriously, I'm fine. You can stop worrying so much."
"Okay, but are you like, completely, one hundred percent, absolutely, positively sure?" Gabriel asks.
Lucifer rolls his eyes. "Yes, I'm sure."
"Are you just lying so we'll get off your back?" Gabriel asks.
"You're just going to keep asking, aren't you?"
Gabriel nods. "Yep, pretty much. Because I want to be completely and totally sure that you're fine and that I don't have to go into overprotective parent mode and take your angel blade away again and watch you twenty-four seven."
Lucifer shakes his head at the boy, amused. "I've survived this long without parents, I think I can handle it."
"I'm gonna take your word for it..." Gabriel says.
"By that, I'm assuming you mean I won't be leaving your sight any time soon?" Lucifer guesses.
"No, you can leave my sight, as long as you're not completely alone."
Lucifer rolls his eyes. "Wow. Thanks for all the trust."
"Would you trust me if I was you?"
"Well, you wouldn't be in this situation in the first place," Lucifer replies. "You're all smiles and rainbows all the time. You're, like, incapable of being upset, ever." Seeing Gabriel's expression, he backtracks on that. "Or you are...? You look like you're upset now."
Gabriel shakes his head. "Nah, I'm fine."
"You're a horrible liar," Michael observes.
"Seriously, what's up?" Lucifer asks.
"Nothing. I'm fine."
"Okay, but you're clearly not, so what's up?" Lucifer asks again.
"And don't say 'nothing,' because it's not nothing," Michael adds.
"Really, I'm fine," Gabriel insists.
"I can read it on your face that you're not fine," Michael says.
Gabriel frowns, knowing that he's already revealed the fact that he's hiding something just by being himself and that there's no point in continuing to pretend he isn't.
"I just miss Jared," Gabriel mumbles.
The angels frown, but are silent knowing there's nothing for them to say. They can't tell him to get over it, because it's not something you can just get over. They can't tell him that he'll get his boyfriend back, either, because that seems unlikely. God had told them only Zeus could change them back, because he has the power to do it in the first place. It seems like this is one problem that can't get much better.
"Have you tried talking to Sam instead?" Michael suggests finally.
"I don't think Sam wants to talk to me," Gabriel replies. "The me that he knows was a total dick to him."
"To be fair, you've done everything to Jared in real life that you've done to Sam in the show," Lucifer reminds him.
"Yeah, but I wasn't just here to annoy Jared in real life," Gabriel counters. "I was one of his best friends for ten years. We dated for, like, four months. We have confirmation that that never happened to Sam."
"I'm sure if you talk to Sam, he'll realize you're more than the angel he knows," Michael assures him.
Gabriel just shakes his head sadly.
"I don't believe that's the problem," Castiel says, speaking for the first time. "Sam is not Jared. They may look the same, but they're very different people, just as an angel is different than their vessel."
"I'm guessing you aren't really talking about Jared?" Michael asks.
Castiel awkwardly looks at the floor. He had been trying to stop the eldest two from pestering Gabriel, but Michael is correct. Though he spoke of Jared, that's not where his mind is.
"I don't see what you're complaining about," Gabriel grumbles. "At least Dean's loved you since season five."
"Dean is not Jensen," Castiel replies simply. "You know what I'm talking about, correct?"
Gabriel nods slightly. "Yeah, I guess. I mean, it's not like I fell in love with Jared's moosey body. I fell in love with Jared, and now he's gone and oh my god, I sound like a teenage girl somebody kill me before I start having periods and stuff."
"As long as you don't start listening to Justin Bieber music, I'll teenage girl with you," Lucifer replies with a slight grin.
"But the Biebs, man!" Gabriel jokes, but his heart clearly isn't in it. "I don't like being a teenage girl. Make it stop!" he whines.
"That's cuz you're missing the best part," Lucifer replies. Suddenly, a large container of ice cream and a spoon appear in his hands, which he gives to Gabriel. "You've got to have the ice cream when your boyfriend leaves. It's tradition."
Gabriel takes it thankfully and begins eating it. He doesn't need it or anything, being an angel and all, but come on. Ice cream! He's not going to pass that up.
"Cas needs ice cream, too," Gabriel announces.
"No, Gabriel, I do not need-I'm not eating that," Castiel declares, eyeing the new tub of ice cream Gabriel is attempting to hand to him.
"You're no fun," Gabriel pouts as the ice cream disappears.
"I don't think any of us are very fun right now," Castiel replies.
And he's right. Between Lucifer's almost suicide, Castiel and Gabriel's heartbreak, and Michael being Michael, none of them are being any fun tonight. But the nice thing about their late night chats is that it stays between the four of them, and whoever's vessel happens to be listening in at the time. Except this time is different. There was a new audience member during the angels' discussion, and that happened to be a very confused Sam Winchester.
