A/N Short and boring chapter I'm sorry
"You didn't have to do that," Alexis tells Michael back on earth.
"Yes, I did."
"I thought you were loyal to Heaven," she reminds him. "You shouldn't have given that up for me."
"I had to," Michael replies, but when asked, doesn't elaborate. "I need to talk to one of the angels but I don't know who..."
"Gabriel?" Alexis suggests.
"No, someone still in Heaven."
"One of the two that were talking to you earlier?"
"No, someone who isn't in charge. It won't make a point if someone in power knows. Um... Baltha — no, he rebelled. Um... Samandriel. That works." He's never been so glad Angel Radio works between archangels and angels of lower levels.
Samandriel, it's Michael.
No response.
Samandriel.
No response.
Samandriel, I know you can hear me.
No response.
Samandriel, I need to talk to you. Come here.
Finally, he gets a response from the angel. I can't.
What do you mean, you can't? Michael asks. I'm not warded.
No, I mean I'm not allowed. Zachariah and Uriel took charge. They don't want us talking to you at all. They don't want us to give you incentive to stay away, or for you to convince us to leave. They're planning to keep Heaven in order until you come back. I know you said you won't, but —
I'm coming back, Michael interrupts. Eventually. There's this whole complicated thing going on with me and Alexis right now, but I'll take care of it eventually and I'll be back to normal.
So why did you call for me? Samandriel asks. If you're coming back eventually, what more do you need? If someone catches me talking to you, it won't be good, so, no offense intended, but please hurry this up.
I just need someone to tell me when it gets bad up there, and I'll come back to fix things.
Then come back now, Samandriel pleads. Zachariah and Uriel will not work together for long. They will tear us apart.
And when that time comes, tell me and I'll return. But right now, I have some things to sort out, and I can't do that if I have a kingdom to rule.
What could possibly be more important than this? Samandriel demands. What could possibly be so important, you're willing to let your home fall apart for it?
It's complicated. Just know that when I return, I will be the same ruler that you once knew. If you need me before then, then tell me.
Of course, but I can't guarantee you will still have all the angels' respect, Samandriel replies.
I'll make do with what I have. Thank you, Samandriel.
And that's it. Their discussion is over. Now for the hard part. What does he do about Alexis? He knew he couldn't just leave her alone, but that's just because they're soulmates. If Alexis just becomes pregnant now, then Michael is free from the chains of love holding him back from reaching his full potential as ruler of Heaven. (A/N Accidental Bon Jovi reference there) At the same time, he doesn't have it in him to do so in any sort of bad way. He'll have to wait until she's ready, not because he wants to, but because the soulmate bond gives him the illusion of wanting to.
That's what Michael hates about this. He knows it isn't him. He doesn't want to be with her, or to have a child with her. Usually, he can stay very unattached from situations he does like, and he can fix them in a very calculated manner.
This is different. He has to be emotionally attached to this, and, even worse, he can't remember why it's a bad thing. He almost finds himself wanting to be with her, despite knowing it's wrong. It's gotten to the point where he doesn't know what's real and what's an effect of the bond.
He could just give in, accept what destiny wants, and deal with the consequences, or he could keep fighting for what he wants. For now, he'll do the latter, but with every passing moment, he finds himself just wanting to give in more.
"So," Michael says after a while. "Did you have any plans when you ran away? Anywhere to go? Anyone to visit?"
"No," Alexis admits sheepishly. "I didn't really think this through."
"That's alright," he assures her. "We'll figure something out soon."
"You better," a familiar British voice says from behind them. "You can be tracked out here. Both of you."
Michael sighs and turns around to face him. "What do you want, Balthazar?"
"I want a lot of things," Balthazar relies with a smirk. "But right now, I'm just wondering why you're out here. What business is there here that you couldn't send someone else out to do?"
"I left Heaven," Michael tells him.
"Hmm, well, I was not expecting to hear that. Tell you what. You two can come with me. I've got a nice place in France that's warded against everything. No one will find you there. You'll be safe, and I get to hear what convinced the final archangel to snap. Deal?"
Michael hesitates, then nods. "Deal."
Balthazar grins and claps his hands together once. "Great. Shall we, then?"
