"Michael?" I say hesitantly. He doesn't acknowledge it. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine," he replies, but his voice is flat, almost empty. He just sits on the couch, staring into space as he has for the two hours since we returned.
"Why don't I believe that?" Gabriel replies, sitting down next to his brother. "Come on, talk to me."
After a moment, he looks over at Gabriel. "Are you sure it was Lucifer? Absolutely, positively sure?"
Gabriel nods sadly. "I'm sorry."
Pause.
"But are you sure it was our Lucifer?"
"Yes, Michael, it was our Lucifer."
"But are you sure?"
"He apologized to you," Gabriel recalls. "That's pretty incriminating."
"Maybe he was apologizing for something else. Like, uh, like..."
"He's literally never done anything wrong when it comes to you," Gabriel reminds him. "I'm sorry, Michael. I know you want to believe that Lucifer's still good, that he'd never hurt someone we love. I do, too. But that's not the Lucifer we know. He's unstable and unpredictable and —"
"Everything our Lucifer was, right," Michael interrupts quietly, returning his gaze to the wall in front of him. "Because he's still our Lucifer, and he killed Alexis."
"Michael..."
"What, Gabriel? What do you have to say that could possibly make this any better?"
"That Lucifer's changed?" Gabriel offers. "He might just be blowing off steam. Maybe he'll come around on his own, after his whole 'don't give a crap' attitude wears off."
"Maybe." The way he says it, I can't tell how he feels about that. It's so emotionless, I can't tell if he even cares about Lucifer at all anymore.
"Mike..." Gabriel reaches a hand out comfortingly, but Michael pushes it away.
Samandriel gestures for me to come over to him, so I do, trying not to stare at his numerous scratches and puncture wounds from Zachariah.
"What's going on?" he asks me quietly.
"You're gonna have to be a bit more specific," I tell him. "There's a lot going on."
"What happened with Lucifer? And who, exactly, was Alexis? I know of her, but not much about her."
Where to begin with this one?
"Well, Lucifer threw a hissy fit because... Actually, the story starts earlier. Okay, so Alexis is Zeus and Macie's daughter — not a consensual thing," I add, noticing his expression. "Maxie didn't want her to know, so she pretended Jesse was her dad."
"And Jesse is...?"
"He was Macie's boyfriend," I clarify. "A demon. From an alternate dimension, though. It's this whole thing and yeah, you get the idea. Well, Alexis found out and she kind of flipped and she just stormed out. Lucifer wanted to go after Rob — err, Zeus — and kill him, but we wanted to go find Alexis, and then Lucifer threw a hissy fit and left.
"We found him a couple months later torturing Zeus, and I'm assuming he killed him afterwards. I have absolutely no idea what he's been up to since. I think he's been on a murder spree — that's what my friend Ryan — he's a hunter, too — told me, but I don't know. Last time we saw him in his natural habitat, he was making out with some slut in a bar."
"Well, from what I've seen of Lucifer, both in Heaven and after the fall, I can't say I'm surprised," Samandriel tells me. "He's never viewed humans as anything but objects. And Alexis, she's...?"
"Macie and Zeus' daughter," I reply. "And Macie is Lucifer and my daughter. So, she's Zeus' daughter and Lucifer's granddaughter."
Samandriel nods slowly as he processes this. "Right... And..." With a glance at Michael, he lowers his voice to ask, "Who was she to Michael?"
How do I answer this one?
"She was —"
"My soulmate," Michael finishes.
"So, a love interest?" Samandriel clarifies.
"No, my soulmate," he repeats.
"Literally," Gabriel adds. "God told us himself."
"So, you two are destined to be together?" Samandriel asks. "To have a child?"
"Yes," Michael replies without looking at him.
"Then, either the world is going to fall off the tracks, or she's not really gone."
This captures Michael's attention. "What do you mean?"
"You were supposed to have a child, who, presumably, was going to either help save or destroy the world. If Alexis is gone, you can't have that child. Either Alexis will come back and you will have that child, or whatever path the world was supposed to be on is going to become majorly screwed up, which would invalidate anything else sealed in stone, from soulmates to judgement day, and I don't see that happening."
A small smile creeps up on Michael's face. "So you think... Alexis isn't gone, then. At least, not permanently."
"It would seem so," Samandriel replies.
Michael's smile disappears as he says, "But can she come back? She's not fully human, so she's not in Heaven, but she's not any type of being the universe has ever seen, so she would she be able to go to Purgatory? It's not designed for beings like her. And if she's not in Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory, she can't come back, so unless Lucifer lied and she's still alive, she's not coming back and fucking hell." He mutters the last part into his hands as if it will muffle the sound, but we all hear it.
Gabriel and I share a concerned look. Michael just swore. Michael just swore. What is going on right now?
"Let's ask Dad," Gabriel suggests finally. "Maybe he can explain whatever it is that's going on."
Michael sighs. "Maybe, but I don't know if I want to know."
"Trust me," Samandriel replies, "you always want to know the truth."
