Bailey's POV
"She's so cute!" I squeal, looking at Macie's new daughter as the three of them enter the war room.
"Her name is Alexis," Macie tells us.
"Aw, hi Alexis!" I coo.
"Oh my god, she's so freaking adorable I'm gonna die!" Misha says enthusiastically.
Macie laughs. "I know, right?"
"Is she human?" Dean asks.
"I've been pregnant for a day. What do you think?"
"Oh, right," Dean replies.
"Nice going, Squirrel," Crowley says sarcastically. "Really bringing your A-game today."
"Where's Dad?" Macie asks, looking around.
"He was talking to God, but that was, like, twenty minutes ago," I tell her. "I can't imagine him talking to him for twenty minutes. I'll go find him, if you want."
"Please?"
I nod and head through the halls, going towards Lucifer's room. I don't hear any noise, and I don't get an answer when I knock. I open the door slowly, wanting to make sure he's not here before I go look somewhere else. I see him sitting on his bed, his back against the wall. His eyes are closed, earbuds in, and he just seems to be trying to block out the world. Being the annoying person that I am, I decide not to let him. I walk up to him and tap his shoulder, getting his attention quickly. He opens his eyes, which immediately land in me. He takes his earbuds out.
"Stop hibernating. Macie's baby is waiting for you," I tell him.
"I'll be out in a minute. I just need a moment to cool off," Lucifer replies.
"Why? I'm pretty sure if you got in a shouting match with God, we would have heard it."
"No, no shouting match," Lucifer replies. "The conversation went fine."
"Then what are you cooling off from?" I ask.
"Nothing," Lucifer says. "It's nothing."
"If it was nothing, you wouldn't be cooling down from it, now, would you?"
Lucifer sighs. "There's no point in me telling you to drop it, is there?"
I shake my head. "Nope! What's up?"
"I just need a minute to collect myself," Lucifer says. "I've never been the nicest person, and talking to my father definitely isn't helping. I just don't want to start snapping at people."
"Since when do you care about how you talk to people?" I ask. "I thought you liked snapping at people."
"Depends on my mood," Lucifer replies.
"Oh. Hey, what're you listening to?" I ask randomly.
"Music," he replies vaguely.
"What song?" I ask.
"A song."
I roll my eyes and reach for his earbuds, pulling them from his phone before he can stop me. Though the part that plays softly is mid-song and mid-line, I recognize it immediately.
"-two paths you can go down. But there's still time to change the road you're on..."
"'Stairway to Heaven'?" I say in surprise.
"Is there a problem with that?" Lucifer asks.
"No, but I just thought... You're listening to a song about the place you hate?"
"I don't hate Heaven. It was my home. Just because I can't go back doesn't mean I don't want to, or that I don't like it. I'd give just about anything to be able to go back."
"Why can't you?" I ask. "You went when you brought me back, remember?"
"I did," he agrees. "And if Michael hadn't owed me, I wouldn't have gotten out."
"He wouldn't have turned you in."
"He would have," Lucifer replies. "Without hesitation. I may be his brother, but Heaven comes first in his mind."
"Well, that's depressing," I say. "Let's not be depressing. Okay, new topic! Seriously, since when do you listen to rock music?"
Lucifer shrugs. "I just do."
"But you told me you hated it. Now you're singing it with Dean freaking Winchester? What happened?"
"I don't know. You just made it sound so good, and I decided to give it a chance."
"You started listening to rock because of me?" I repeat, surprised.
Lucifer nods. "Basically."
"I feel like I'm obligated to listen to country now, but I won't."
Lucifer chuckles. "You don't have to," he assures me. "But you should."
"I'll pass," I reply.
"I figured."
"You wanna come out and see the baby now?" I ask hopefully.
He hesitates quickly before nodding. "Sure."
We rejoin the group in the war room, where I'm pretty sure Alexis has grown already. Macie and Jesse are sitting on the couch with her, half watching Supernatural and half paying attention to their baby. She is Jesse's baby, even if it's not genetically true. He'll probably end up being Alexis' favorite person pretty soon. He's the most chill person I've ever met. There's no way she could not love him like a father.
"You're already ignoring your baby?" I observe with a laugh.
"We're letting her watch the demon exorcism," Macie replies. "We're doing her a favor. Hey, Dad! This is Alexis."
Alexis looks at him and starts making cute baby noises.
"When you were this age, you were already speaking," Lucifer tells her. "I think Alexis is a bit of an underachiever."
Macie laughs. "Yeah," she agrees. "Hey, Alexis. Say 'hi' to your grandfather!"
"Holy crap, we're grandparents," I say as the realization hits me. "We're too young to be grandparents."
"I'm billions of years old," Lucifer replies. "I think I'm a bit old to be a grandfather."
"Oh, true," I agree. "But I'm only eighteen! I'm not supposed to be a grandmother yet!"
"I'm a couple months old and I'm a mother," Macie replies. "How do you think I feel?"
"Proud that you have a baby," I reply.
"Yeah, that too," she agrees. "Wait, what just happened? I'm confused," she says, glancing back at the tv. Jesse explains everything, which is strange because he wasn't watching, either, and his dimension wouldn't have the tv show. He probably read the books. I'm sure they were a hit over there."I'm going to bed," I announce after an hour or so. It's not too late, though there's no definite sleeping schedule with these people so it's definitely a reasonable bedtime.
I go to my room, crawling into bed with the lights out. A few minutes later, I hear the door open, and I look over to see the faint shadow of Lucifer standing in the doorway, my phone in his hand. I can hear it vibrating.
"You have a call," Lucifer tells me, handing me the phone. "Wasn't sure if you wanted to take it."
"Thanks," I reply, taking the phone and answering, too tired to check the caller ID. Lucifer asks if he should go, but I tell him he doesn't have to before I answer, "Hello?"
"Hey, Bailey," a familiar voice says. There was a time when the sound of it made my heart flutter, but now, it only brings a feeling of nervousness. Why is he calling me? What's going on?
"Hey, Ryan," I say, trying to conceal my shock. I haven't heard from him in forever. We didn't have a rough parting, but it's been a long time since we dated. I didn't expect him to call me again. "What's up?"
"Not much. You busy?"
"No," I reply, stifling a yawn.
"Oh, it's probably, like, ten back in Mass, huh?"
"Yeah, but it's fine," I assure him. "I don't have anything to do tomorrow. I can sleep in. What's up, Ryan?"
"I'm coming back home for the holidays, and I was wondering if you were still around," he tells me. "I figured if you were, we could meet up."
"I don't know," I say awkwardly. "My schedule changes a lot. When are you thinking? I'll try to keep the day free."
"I'm flying up tomorrow," he informs me. "So how about Thursday? So I can have a day to recover from jet lag, you know?"
Is today Tuesday? Probably. "Sure. Where do you want to meet?"
"The Ninety Nine?" he suggests, naming the restaurant we would hang out at a lot back in high school. The majority of our dates were there, because we both loved the food. I haven't been there since he left for college, though. It'll be nice to go back there.
"Are you even allowed there anymore? They're all about Red Sox. You don't even live in Red Sox territory anymore."
"Red Sox is still my team, now and forever," he replies, and I can practically hear his grin. "So, Thursday, say, four o'clock? Meet me at the Ninety Nine?"
"Yep. See you then. Bye, Ryan."
"Bye, Bailey. 'Night."
We hang up and I put my phone on the floor next to my bed. I look over at Lucifer, who's watching with an unreadable expression.
"Ryan?" he repeats the name I called him. "Your ex boyfriend?"
"Um, yeah, but we're friends now," I assure him, though I don't think we've ever just been friends. It was "love" at first sight, or as much love as it could be in high school. We dated since we met, just about, and when we broke up, we drifted apart until we were more acquaintances than friends. Now, I don't know what we are.
"And you're meeting up with him again?" Lucifer observes.
"Yeah, like someone meets up with a friend they haven't seen in years. Chill out, Lucifer. It's not a date. I'm just meeting up with a friend of mine."
Lucifer hesitates before nodding, apparently deciding to believe me. "Right. Of course."
I roll out of bed and walk up to Lucifer, wrapping my arms around him and putting my face right up to his. "I love you, okay? That's not going change just because I'm seeing my ex again. You're my boyfriend, and I wouldn't want anyone else."
To emphasize this, I give him a kiss, feeling him smile before we stop, but we don't move apart.
"I love you," I murmur.
"I love you, too," he replies.
"But I love sleep more," I announce, crawling back into bed.
Lucifer chuckles. "Great, thanks," he says sarcastically. "Good night, Bailey."
"'Night, Lucifer."
