Lauren

Prologue

Being the daughter of the southern mob leader was not good, especially when there was a target on your back everywhere you went.

I am Lauren Michelle Jauregui, first born daughter to Michael Jauregui, Caporegime of the Southern Mob of the United States, and life is tough.

Being born into the mob as an only child and being female was uncommon and dangerous, especially if people wanted your father dead. Life in the mob was hard and it would only become worse.

I was only nine when I stared into the eyes of Dinah Jane Hansen, the girl I was destined to marry the moment I turned sixteen. I was practically a child bride! Married off for power and money, but it was the best my father could do for me.

I had showed no interest in boys when I was young and eleven year old Dinah made it clear she had no intentions on marrying a man. Lucky for her, there were no boys wealthy or strong enough to marry her and I was the only girl around her age. So it was me, I was forced into an arranged marriage with the northern mob leader's daughter.

I didn't think it would be that bad, till I found out about Dinah's "special condition". The girl I was to marry had a penis and it wasn't that it bothered me, it was that she was considered a man.

I had been kept in the dark about nearly everything that went on in the outside world and I was more than shocked to find out Dinah shot and killed a man at the age of ten, making her a "man".

When I met her when I was a child, she was sweet and gentle but things happen in six years. All I knew now was that she was a killer and anyone could tell me she was crazy, full of the need to murder. That was what frightened me the most.

I had heard too many stories of how she plunged a knife deep in the gut of one of her father's enemies or how she strangled a boy to death who had accidentally wandered onto their property and they scared me. She was the woman I was going to marry in two months and I had no idea what she had in store for me.

Was Dinah Jane the monster everybody said she was or was she the sweet girl I met when I was a child?

Only time could tell.

"Lauren!" My father yelled and I flinched at how rough his voice was, my hands immediately jumping away from the piano keys as he yelled for me.

I had just been working on a beautiful piece by Johann Strauss the Second before my father called for me, much to my disappointment. I was looking forward to taking a test run at the new music he had bought for me.

However, afraid of getting in trouble, I left the beautiful Hamilton Grand Piano and padded down the long hallway in a rush, scared of hearing him yell for me again

My father was a strict man and enjoyed the finer things, and there was no doubt he loved me but he had no tolerance for defiance or people who did not take orders.

"Yes, father?" I asked as I entered his office, placing myself in one of the leather chairs before his large desk.

"Good morning, my joy," he greeted and smiled softly at me, my instincts returning the kind gesture immediately.

"Good morning, papa."

"How is the piece going?" He asked, his genuine interest in my music making me sigh in relief, thankful he was not angry or anything. Sometimes he called for me, just to have a nice conversation with me. It was a luxury many kids my age didn't get to experience because some men in the mob were rather abusive and tough.
