Lauren

Five Years Later

I watched as Dinah ran through the yard, chasing a butterfly as she giggled, trying to catch it. What a precious sight.

The seven year old didn't seem to care that I was watching as she laughed and ran after it before the butterfly flew up and out of her reach. She pouted, watching as it flew higher and higher till it disappeared behind a tree and she lost interest.

Her eyes were shielded, hiding any sadness that she probably had. She was just like Dinah, I thought to myself. Already learning to hide her emotions without anyone telling her to. I wondered if she would still be this way if Dinah would've came back. I wondered that everyday. How would things be different?

"Mommy, I'm hungry," she said as she approached me, climbing up the steps of the porch.

"Nice to meet you hungry, I'm Camila," I heard the voice of my best friend and I smiled, turning my head to see Camila standing in the doorway of the sliding glass door with Normani and Ally along with their daughter.

"Tia! Ally! Mani!" Dinah shouted, running to Camila and jumping up into her arms, the Cuban luckily catching the girl by a new found instinct.

"Hey! What about me?" Normani questioned and I smiled as Dinah giggled and hugged Camila, her arms squeezing the life out my poor friend.

"Here," Camila turned around, feeling around for Mani before handing the child over. She immediately hugged Normani and then reached for Ally, a grin on her lips.

"Where's Jojo?" She asked, her lips pulling into a frown as I smiled and stood up, setting my glass of wine on the table.

"Hey," I greeted Camila, sticking my hand out for her to feel before she practically dove into my arms.

"I'm down here!" I heard Jojo yell and laughed quietly before melting into Camila's embrace.

"How are you?" She whispered, her arms wrapped around my neck. I could hear Normani, Ally, and Jojo talking to Dinah but I was more interested in my friend who had recently received news of a procedure to gain her vision back again.

"I'm good, but I want to hear about you. Did you decide to do it?" I asked, knowing she would probably say yes.

"No." She surprised me as I pulled away, confused as I saw she was smiling.

"W-what? Why?" I was shocked that she hadn't taken the opportunity and in the pit of my stomach I was sad because I loved Camila's chocolate brown eyes. She had a chance to get them back, so why wouldn't she?

"Because I love this Lauren. As twisted as that sounds, I love to hear and to feel, it feels more valuable then being able to see. I feel more connected. I don't know if that makes sense to you but I just, I can't imagine seeing again. Things just wouldn't be the same," she explained and I felt myself nodding.

"Hi Lauren!" Ally appeared next to me and I hugged her, my conversation with Camila ending most abruptly.

"Hey Ally. How are you?" I asked sweetly.

"Oh I'm great. And you?" I replied, saying that I was fine, just like always. The truth was, I hadn't been okay ever since Dinah left, but I had to be strong. Part of me wanted to blame Ally and Normani but once it had been revealed that Mani had nothing to do with the invade and that it was her father, I forgave her. She couldn't control what her father did after all.
