His eyes were piercing into my own. He wouldn't move his eyes away from mine, not even for a second. Something about his stare was captivating, stopping me from being able to tear away either.
As I gazed into his eyes, he slowly inched closer to me without breaking eye contact. Once he was stood right in front of me, he began to crouch down again so that our faces were level with eachother.
No one spoke a word as we continued to stare. It was as if he was trying to figure me out without saying anything.
His eyes changed.
Before they were a dark brown, almost black colour. Now, they were suddenly a light smokey grey colour staring at me. I could tell he had noticed and shut his eyes tight for a second before reopening them. They had returned to their original colour.
"Who are you?" he asked quietly, his voice was deep.
"Who are you?" I repeated and squinted my eyes as I continued to stare into his eyes.
"I asked you first" he responded as the stare started becoming unbelievably intense.
"I guess we'll never find out who eachother are then" I retaliated, trying to use a tone that came across as anything other than friendly.
He smiled and stood up again, breaking the stare and looked around his surroundings. I felt like I had been let off a spell after finally breaking away from his stare. He continued to look around before walking next to me and sat down against the tree.
"What do you think you are doing?" I inquired, not understanding what his motives were.
"Getting comfortable" he responded and looked in my direction, still resting his head against the tree.
I decided not to ask him anything else and look across the stream, like I had originally come here to do.
"So, what's a girl like you doing in the woods at this time of night?" he asked, I could sense his stare on me as I continued to look elsewhere.
"Shouldn't you be getting back to your friends?" I asked, trying to avoid his questions.
"They'll come back so I'll just wait for them. Anyway, I'd rather sit here with you" he said, but whispered the last part.
"Who said I wanted you to sit with me?" I asked and turned towards him, meeting his gaze, again.
"You didn't, but I want to" he said and smiled, a bright smile showing his dimples again, along with his teeth. He also squeezed his eyes shut.
I couldn't help to smile a tiny bit from seeing him like that.
"See, you don't have to be scared of me. I'm not going to hurt you" he said quietly.
"You still might" I scoffed and looked down at my sleeves that were hanging over my hands.
"I could, but I don't want to" I looked over to him and he smiled again and looked down at his feet.
"Why did you stop here? You obviously weren't really tired" I asked, I didn't feel as awkward or scared around him now.
"I didn't really want to follow with what they were out to do. I've already done enough today" he sighed and looked down again.
I decided it was probably best not to question anymore, I didn't know him enough to start asking questions. I don't think it would be a smart idea to start diving into someone's personal business when I still didn't know whether they secretly wanted to kill me or not.
"Why were you here anyway?" he looked towards me. I looked around my surroundings and stared at the tree across from us.
"Because I felt like it" I said bluntly. To be fair, that was the only reason that I was here, just had an urge.
