| 23 | Words Hurt

After I had done my daily morning routine I went to the medical room and sat down beside one of the guards. Both were still unconscious and healing from last night's attack. I won't push them too hard for answers; I just need to know who the person is. Zen isn't allowed to know that I'm working on this otherwise he might blow a fuse., last night he strictly stated that I was not to help but he doesn't seem to care about rules himself and I didn't promise anything so I guess it's all right for me to this. Like I say, you're not in trouble until you get caught. ;p

I read a book on a chair beside the bed waiting for them to wake up, patience is the key. I opened my book and started to read but of course with my luck someone knocked on the door and was proceeding to come in. I shoved the book under the bed and rapidly slipped through the window. I'm glad I did so because it was Zen coming to check up on them. I sat under the window seal and let out a small sigh of relief.

I heard a mumble and groan, one of the guards were just starting to wake up. "Take it easy" Zen helped the man sit up in his bed. "do you know who attacked you?"

"It was a woman, she wore a cloak and it covered her face" "she had a companion, a male who held a dagger, he's the one who stabbed Sora. Sora was the other guard; the guard speaking is Izumo.

My theory was correct, it was a woman and a man working together. I felt proud of myself, I should go and investigate the dagger. Maybe there's something on it like a crest that could show me who they are. I crawled away from the building and snuck back into Zen's office while he was talking to the guards for more information. Zen's going to be so proud when he finds out that I solved who it is, we'll save the victory till the time that I do find the culprit. I held the dagger in my hands investigating for any symbols or certain patterns that may be of use to this investigation. There was a snake like pattern that wrapped around the handle but that's all there was, no crest, nothing. I put the dagger back where I found it. I walked out of Zen's office in disappointment.

"What's a commoner like you doing in Zen's office!" I looked up to a girl, the same girl who left Zen's office the other day crying. She was the one who asked if she could marry Zen. I shouldn't let her know that I'm searching for an intruder in the castle, she'll get scared and flee giving Clarines a bad name.

"I was going to have an appointment with Zen today but it seems that he isn't in there right now" "I'll be leaving now" I bowed to her and walked past, that should be a good enough excuse.

"what were you going to discuss?" I could feel her smirk "what were you going to say to him?"

"I was going to discuss some business matters"

"Oh really?" "don't think I don't know your feelings for the prince" her smirk widened "I can tell you right now that he would never be interested in you, you're in the friendzone I'm afraid" She turned around and faced me head on. "The friendship zone is a sticky place and someone like you isn't strong enough to escape it" "I mean look at you, you're a disgrace" "your clothes are disgusting, you don't even have a status around here" "all you are is some lowly worker that follows orders from everyone around her" she flicked my forehead "someone like you shouldn't even know Zen personally" I was speechless, I thought I was absolutely prepared for words that were going to hurt me but I've been proven wrong. "and I can tell you right now, he hangs out with that red head a lot more than he hangs out with you" "she has a better chance with him than you ever will, she's prettier, smarter, cuter" I wanted to scream at her, saying that none of the wasn't true but it was, all of it. Shirayuki has always been better than me and I should've known that Zen would like her more than me. My world paled like suddenly the colours had been sucked out by her words. I put my head down in shame. "You have a good day and think about everything I just said" "it might be easier just to leave Clarines and forget everything about your feelings" "there is after all nothing for you here" and with that she walked straight past me as if she had done nothing to me at all. I looked up from the ground and started to walk to the library. The peace and quiet should calm me down, as I entered I felt depressed, everything was a pail colour, nothing was bright an happy. I ran my fingers alone the spines of the books and picked out a book that talked about countries and their crests. I should take her advice and leave Shirayuki and Zen to their happy ending but before any of that happens I'll finish what I started and make sure I leave Clarines knowing that the kingdom and Zen is safe.

I looked through the book searching for anything that had to do with snake spirals, I came across page 196. There was information about a country that's national animal is a snake, they are common in the country so it makes sense - Kensington – The country is known for having many wealthy families. They're overseas so the only reason why they would be here is if they are staying the castle, why they would attack me, I don't know. Considering it's a country that bathes in gold the people who are targeting me must be nobles meaning they reside in the castle. I sighed in exhaustion, I just crossed a whole lot of people of the list, now I just need to know who resides in this palace that is from Kensington. It isn't going to be easy without Zen's help and of course it isn't proven that the people who attacked me are even from this place, the snake on the dagger could just be a coincidence but it's the only lead we have so I'll put my faith on it. I shut the book and placed it back on the shelf.

"Hello?" a young male entered the library. Blonde hair and brown eyes, handsome if I so say myself, Zen is cuter though. I mentally slapped myself, I shouldn't think about that. "Excuse me, could you lease show me where the animal books are" he asked me politely, he wasn't noble because he wasn't wearing anything to fancy, he's probably just another worker of the castle that I haven't met yet. I smiled at him hiding my pain and walked over to where most of the animal books are.

"They should be in this section here"

"Thanks, you're the first one to treat me politely at all around here, most ignore me when I ask for help" I looked confused. Is he new at his job? Now that I think about it Zen was always the one to help me.

"I'm glad I could be of help, I'm Y/N the palaces blacksmith" I bowed to him politely. He slightly blushed at my gesture.

"I'm Shiro, pleased to meet you" "I work for the palace too, I'm a chef" he held out his hand to shake, I took it. "If you don't mind, could we please be friends, I recently came here with my sister an I haven't made any new friends yet so I was hoping that you..." he trailed off with I words not completing the sentence.

"Okay sure, I can be your new friend but I have a feeling that I won't be around Clarines for much longer" I sheepishly smiled, I'm letting him down.

"well then let's have fun together while you are here!" He hugged me tight and rested his head on my shoulder. We were the same height, he was about 2cm taller unlike Zen who was taller than me by 15cm. That's why I always had my head in his chest when he hugged me. I mentally slapped myself again, I have to stop thinking about him! Now that I'm thinking about him I just realised that I can't sleep in his room anymore and with the medical room taken I can't sleep in there either.

"Shiro, do you have a spare bed in your bedroom?" He looked at me confused.

"Yes, oh that's right your room got burnt down right and then you slept in the medical room" "and the guards we-" "I mean why don't you just continue sleeping in there?" Does this guys know about the guards?

"Well the medical room will be occupied for a while so can sleep in the same room as you for a few nights?"

"Yeah sure, anything for a friend" He smiled sweetly at me. He's suspicious but I think I can trust him for now. It would make sense for anyone in the castle to know about the attack on the guards but there is no way he could know about the letters unless he's the one in the duo.
