Eighteen

By the time Zoe left, Troye was tired again. He crawled through the house to his water bowl and lapped some of it up, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand before crawling into the living room. He pawed at a toy for a moment, watching the ball roll across the carpeted floor before padding over to the window and peering out. His ears flickered in interest when he noticed a bird on the branch right outside the window. His eyes widened when it hopped from the branch to the window sill, settling down right in front of Troyes's face. 

He wrinkled his nose up, staring directly at the bird. The little bird seemed to know that there was a window between them, providing protection for it and annoyance for Troye. Troye meowed at it, pawing at the window. It didn't even bother the bird, who just hopped along the ledge. 

Troye's tail flickered in annoyance as he meowed again, pressing his face to the glass. He raised his hand back up and pawed at the window some more, but it didn't get him anywhere. The bird was then joined by a friend, and then another one. Troye started pacing back and forth, eyes never leaving the birds. No matter how many times he hit the window, they didn't leave. His ears were back in annoyance by the time he sat down, staring at the stupid birds. 

His ears pricked forwards again when he realized he could just open the window and shoo them away. He stood up and flipped the locks on the window, smirking proudly as he pushed it open. The birds seemed to smirk right back at him as they watched one of their friends flew right threw the window into the house. 

Troye gasped, slamming the window shut so the other two couldn't get in. This action of course trapped the bird in the house with no means of escape, but it didn't seem to mind. Troye shook of his shock and hissed at it, slowly moving forward with his ears pinned back. He had no clue what he would do once the thing was caught, but he was not that worried about it. His task was to catch the thing before Jacob got back and-

His eyes widened as he heard the door handle wiggling, no doubt done by a pair of little hands. It was obviously Joel, who else would it be? And if Joel was back, Jacob would be, too. So there Troye was, stood in the kitchen with a bird calmly perched on the fridge, Jacob and the boys right outside the door. He quickly glanced at the window, whining when he saw that the two birds that had been there had been joined by some friends. Outside the door was Joel, and none of the other windows were hidden from Jacob's view.

Normally Troye would have left it and explained the situation to the human, but at this point he was kind of panicking. He shooed the bird off of the fridge and easily herded it into the closest closet, slamming the door closed behind it. The bird didn't seem to mind, just hopping up onto a shelf and made itself comfy. Troye turned around to see Jacob looking at him with raised eyebrows.

"You good?" he asked with a chuckle, setting Riley down and letting him crawl after his brother to Troye's feet. "You look shocked."

"Oh, I'm fine," Troye lied, smiling at the human. "Did you guys have a good time?"

Joel nodded excitedly, grabbing Riley's hand and helping the younger one to his feet. "Mhm! Look what dad got me!" He held up a truck and pressed a button on it, setting off some sirens and little lights.

"Oh wow!" Troye said, taking the toy from Joel's hands and inspecting it. "This is so cool, Joel! I'm sure it will be a lot of fun to play with."

Joel grinned and let go of Riley's hand as Troye picked him up and carried him to the kitchen, smiling casually at Jacob. "Did you get everything we needed?" He asked, setting Riley on the counter so he could take his coat off.

"Yup, everything we will need has been bought. Did you and Zoe finish off everything you wanted to do?"

Troye nodded. "Everything is ready. We fixed a few other things too. Wait till you see a dress we found, it's so cute." They chatted for a while longer, Joel occasionally running over to show off a new feature he found on his ambulance. "Can I Skype Ryan? I want to tell him that we are almost ready."

"Of course. You can do that now if you would like, I can handle things down here."

Troye smiled in thanks, making his way up the stairs and pulling Jacob's laptop off the desk. He sat on the bed and logged into Skype, clicking on Brendon's contact. He waited for Ryan to pick up, smiling when Brendon did. "Hi!" Troye greeted, waving to Brendon.

"Hey, Troye." Brendon smiled back. "I'll go get Ryan, okay?"

Troye nodded and thanked the man, watching as he walked away from the computer and called Ryan in. The hybrid hurried in and sat down in front of his computer, grinning at Troye. "Hi, Tro! How are you?"

"I'm good. I wanted to call and tell you that Jake finished off the last of the shopping today. Zoe and I also spent a lot of time fixing some clothes and snow stuff for the boys. They are very excited for this too."

Ryan smiled. "I'm excited too. I miss you, a lot."

"I miss you too," Troye said. "One week left."

"One week is so long though," Ryan whined, getting a stern look from Brendon, who was barely even in the shot. "Sorry Master."

The nekos continued to talk for about a half an hour longer, talking about the most random things. They talked about the trip and the kittens, their opinions on dogs and how Ryan and Brendon's new music was coming. Everything was going well... Until Jacob's voice could be heard yelling up the stairs.

"Troye, why the hell is there a bird in the house?!"

Troye's blue eyes widened and the colour drained from his face as he heard what Jacob had said. He had forgotten about that. He turned to Ryan, who was looking at him with confusion etched onto his face. "I uh... I gotta go, Ry. I'll um, I'll call you later!" He hung up before Ryan could reply, slowly making his way down the stairs with his tail tucked between his legs. This would be fun.
