Thirty Seven

It was Christmas morning, and Troye woke up to find Joel and Riley placed carefully on the end of his bed. They both wore little Santa hats and huge smiles.

"Good morning," Troye said. "Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas," Joel said, leaning forward to hug Troye's legs. Joel giggled and did the same.

"Merry Christmas baby," Jacob said, leaning down to kiss Troye softly. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling great." Troye was telling the truth; for the first time in weeks he felt great. The pain in his stomach was dulled by the medication and the joy he was feeling, and his whole family was there with him.

"We brought presents!" Joel said, hopping off of the bed and running over to the corner. "Look! Riley and I chose this one out for the baby!" He ran back to the bed and climbed up onto it. "Dad says that she is too little to open it by herself though, so you may have to help her."

Troye giggled at how excited Joel was, trying to peek into the gift bag.

"No daddy!" Joel said with a gasp. "We can't open it till we're with her!"

Troye giggled it again, setting it down on the floor beside his bed. "Okay, we can wait. Why don't you get a present for you and Riley and open them?"

Joel nodded and ran back to the corner again, digging through the presents before he found one addressed to him and another that was for Riley. "Here," he said, handing one to Riley. He climbed back on to the bed and set his present beside himself, turning to help Riley open his first. "Like this!" Joel tore back the corner of the paper, showing Riley how to pull it away. The smaller neko giggled in excitement as he pulled the paper away on his own, revealing a light up piano toy, one of the ones that taught shapes and colours.

Once Joel was done with that he grabbed his own, opening it up and pulling out a toy truck. He gasped in excitement and hugged it, despite it being made of plastic. "I love it! Thank you!" he exclaimed.

"You're welcome," Jacob replied, watching Joel hurry to the pile to bring Troye and Jacob presents.

Troye insisted that Jacob opened his first, watching with kitten-like excitement in his eyes as Jacob tore back the paper, revealing a new journal. It was so pretty in Troye's opinion, leather bound with a leather string that wrapped around it so you could tie it shut. The paper was not lined because it looked and felt old. It also smelled good.

Yes, Troye had tested.

"It's so nice," Jacob said in awe, flipping the book over and running his fingers over the stitching. "I love it. Thank you, Troye." He leaned down to kiss Troye, the hybrid smiling in response.

"No problem, I'm glad you like it."

"Open yours now!" Joel said, bouncing excitedly. Troye's was wrapped up too, but very fancy-like. It looked like it had been done by a professional (no offence to Jacob's wrapping skills, they were very good).

Troye pulled the pink ribbon off and lifted the lid off of the silver box, looking up at Jacob as he pulled te tissue paper back. It looked expensive, and he had not even seen the contents yet.

Troye gasped as he gently picked up the delicate looking collar. It was well made though, he really didn't need to worry about breaking it, but it was just so pretty. Troye had never owned such a pretty collar - not even his pretty pink one with roses and chains all around it.

The collar was a pale pink, almost a peach colour. It had a gold buckle, a gold loop for a leash and a gold heart shaped pendant attached that had 'Troye' carved into it. Also in the box was a leash, which had a matching gold clasp and soft pink faux leather. "It's so gorgeous," Troye said with a gasp, holding it up.

He looked at it with an awed expression, looking up at Jacob a moment later. "Jacob... this looks so expensive."

Jacob shrugged, running his hand over Troye's lower thigh with a smile. "Anything for my kitty," he said, leaning down to kiss Troye softly. "I love you so much."

"I love you too," Troye replied, setting the collar down and reaching up to hug Jacob. "I love you so, so much."

When they pulled apart Jacob reached for the buckle to Troye's everyday collar, unclasping it and setting it down, then picking up the new one. He carefully clipped it on and adjusted it so it was comfortable, Troye's smile huge. "Let me get a picture of you baby," Jacob said, standing up straight and pulling his phone out of his pocket.

"I wanna be in it!" Joel said excitedly, hurrying to run to the side of the bed and plastering a huge smile onto his face.

"You'd better get in there too, Riley," Jacob said, picking the smallest neko up and setting him on the bed next to Troye.

"I have the most gorgeous family," Jacob said after taking a few pictures, lowering his phone and kissing the three kittens on the top of their heads. "Come on now, get back to unwrapping your presents."

Joel hurried to the pile of presents and was about to run back when there was a knock on the door. Right after the knocks the door opened and Dr. Iero walked in, Gee following right behind him, their ears laying sideways against their hair and their fluffy tail between their legs.

"Jacob, Troye. I'm sorry, but your daughter passed away at 8:36a.m. this morning. We did all we could. I am so sorry."
