The hybrid held his tail in his hands, looking anywhere other than Jacob's eyes. Joel was having a blast with Riley, standing at the edge of the fridge and staring up at the bird that was staring right back at them. "Oh Dad, can we keep her?" Joel asked, turning and looking at Jacob with excitement in his eyes. Jacob silently shook his head, making Joel frown. "But Dad! She likes us!"

"You can't keep her," Jacob sighed. "You and Riley need to go get ready for bed while I talk to your dad about this." He looked back at Troye and the hybrid smiled awkwardly at Joel.
He didn't say anything, just waving to Joel as he stomped up the stairs with a pout on his face. Riley - who was still too little to get ready by himself - looked up at them questioningly, his blue eyes wide.

Troye still hadn't said anything, standing awkwardly and chewing on his bottom lip. "I'm uh... I'm sorry?"

Jacob raised his eyebrows, crossing his arms over his chest. "So, care to explain how 'Twinkle' got into our house?"

"Well..." Troye looked at the bird, who was still casually sitting there. He then looked at the window, seeing that all of the birds were gone. "I opened the window to shoo it away and it flew in. But I couldn't open the window again because there was more birds there and then you came home and it went into the closet so I closed the door and then you guys came in-" Troye paused to take in a big breath "-and I promise I was going to let it back out once you were upstairs or something!"

Jacob looked more amused than angry as he looked at Troye, who was blushing darkly and clutching his tail in his hands. "So it just flew right past you?"

"Mhm!"

"You're sure that's how it went?"

Troye nodded quickly. "Yes! That is how it went."

Jacob stared at Troye for a moment before beginning to laugh, pulling the small neko into a hug. "Oh, Troye. What am I to do with you?"

Troye looked up at him with wide eyes. "You're not mad?"

"No, I'm not mad." Jacob kissed Troye's ears with another chuckle. "Next time you should probably tell me when a bird is in the house though, okay?"

Troye blushed and nodded, looking over at the bird. "Can we get it out of here now?"

Jacob laughed and nodded, letting go of Troye. "You go up and get the boys ready for bed and I will take care of our little bird, okay?"

"Okay." Riley let out meow of protest as Troye scooped him up and carried him up the stairs, gently setting him on Joel's bed. Joel was sitting on the floor, his arms crossed over his chest and his mouth in a pout. "Oh Joel, what's wrong?" Troye asked, noting that the small neko was still fully dressed and that he hadn't done anything to get ready for bed.

"I want to keep Twinkle!" Joel replied, his voice whiny. "Why is dad so mean?"

Troye just shook his head with a sigh, patting Joel's curls. "We can't keep the bird though, she is a wild animal."

"No she isn't! She likes us!"

"No Joel. Wild animals like living outside, it's where they belong. We belong inside! With humans!"

"But she doesn't want to be wild! Daddy, you even said she flew right in! I heard you!"

"She was probably just hungry bud. We can't keep birds, they could carry diseases and I don't want you or Riles to get sick."

Joel's jaw dropped, his eyes widening. "We need to take care of her, daddy! What if she is sick! What if she came for help?"

"Nonono, she is okay. She just came for a visit, and now she needs to leave. Just like when Aunt Hari comes over. If we look out the window I'm sure we will see her again. And we can buy some bird seed when we get home and put it out for her when she gets hungry."

Joel sniffled. "Can we?"

"Yes we can," Troye smiled.

"Promise?"

"I promise. Now, go get your pajamas on so we can sing a goodnight song."

"Okay, Daddy. I love you."

"I love you too, kitten."
