A spectrum of emotions arced like a rainbow, separated and segmented, then bled together. The air was fraught with colors: yellow, red, black, blue, green, white. Cowardice, anger, darkness, cold, calm, and peace sunk into their souls. They were all caught up in the kaleidoscope.

Rescue vehicles screamed down the highway, lights flashing, horns blaring. Radios crackled with information. "Multi-vehicle collision – possible fatalities," came the call on the police and fire scanners. Fire and rescue squads converged at the site of the accident, fighting for space with the twisted metal splayed out across the highway. The smell of gasoline hung in the air. Glass shards sprinkled the pavement, glittering in the street. Flares eerily lit up the cloudy afternoon sky. A tractor trailer had overturned slamming into oncoming traffic. Cars were sandwiched together. Injuries were catastrophic as rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victims. With steely precision, their emotions on hold, they tended to their victims, among them Theresa. Her auburn hair, tangled and stained with blood concealed the terror captured on her face as the paramedics gently unwrapped her delicate fingers clutched around the steering wheel. She was alive, but in critical condition. She was so close to her destination before the accident occurred - only minutes from her exit for the campus. Precious minutes. And now precious minutes were needed to stabilize her for transport. Her roommate was not so lucky.
