drew grew fond of abby very quickly. abby was the perfect listener when drew talked about space. drew was the perfect teacher for abby who didn't know much about space. abby loved books, now especially space books. every recess, they sneak past the recess aids to look at space books in the library. though they only had three in the entire elementary school library, they were fascinated with each colorful picture of our galaxy.

the two six year olds loved each other's company. the other kids didn't understand how abby would willingly be near drew. especially alex walker. alex walker was the biggest and most popular first grader in the school and just so happened to go to class in room seven and hate drew's guts. the fact that a cute girl like abby was hanging out with a kid like drew lit a fire in his stomach.

"abby, why do you hang out with this gorilla looking kid? do you even see him?" alex shouted across the cafeteria one lunch break. confused, abby looked at alex and then drew then back at alex, "yes alex, i see him. i have eyes. what's the problem?"

alex scoffs and stomps up to drew and abby, who are standing in the lunch line. "he's black! look at his skin!" abby again looks from both boys and back to alex, "i still dont see whats wrong. why can't he be black? my skin has freckles. your skin is tan. drews is black. why can't it be?"

drew feels himself smile and his face warm up. alex scowls at both of them and storms off to the blacktop to play basketball.

"thanks abby." abby smiles and grabs his hand, "you're welcome drew."
