'happy new year!' is plastered on every sign down the school hallways, as if its an important PSA the school is required to show. drew still thinks its a waste of time because it still makes him stop and think, wait it's not january... drew shakes his head, you shouldn't go out of your way just to make a ton of high school students even more confused than they already are.

he arrives at his locker 683 and clicks the combination in, popping the lock open. he dumps his book load onto the tight shelves. he shuts the locker and turns to lean on the front of the locker to organizes his notes for AP Physics.

"hey-o drew, how was summer?" drew looks up to see abby smiling ear to ear, clutching her stack of textbooks as to not drop them. drew closes his notebook and sticks it under his arm, "hey-o, you need help," he asks, already reaching for the top three books.

she smiles shyly and thanks him. they walk her to her locker across the quad. they laugh and talk about the hilarious video of someone shouting under a blanket about leaving britney spears alone. "what a random way to become famous, don't you think?" they laugh again and agree.

drew jogs ahead to catch the closing door with his foot, "after you milady."

she curtsies and nods, "thank you, sir."

drew sees a tall boy with long messy black hair jogging up to catch the door so he waits, holding it open. as he gets closer, drew squints. why does he look so familiar? who could he possibly be? drew sees the boys face booming with glee as if he recognizes drew.

abby being so confused, walks back to drew to see who he's staring at. she pokes her head around and studies the boy for a second then gasps, "is it- no! clayton?" instantly it dawned on him, "no way!"

drew and abby run and throw the books to the floor before tackling him with a hug.

"you're walking! oh my god! how- i almost didn't recognize you man!" drew pulls back, his throat getting tighter from happiness. abby pulls back, not letting go of the two boys, tears in her eyes, "we've missed you so much. god what.. five years?"

clayton's beaming smile doesn't shake, "yup, five years. i cant believe how fast i found you guys! i thought for sure you aren't best friends anymore, but wow! you guys still going strong!" abby and drew chuckle but guilt is written clearly over their faces. clayton raises an eyebrow, "no? oh okay... well i'm psyched i found you guys."

they hug again, all feeling a little bit more uneasy.
