PoV: Abby
abby watches as drew connects several of her freckles in a shape she'd never seen before, "it looks like a melting cat," she giggles. he grins and connects the last two together with her favorite sparkly purple pen. she thanks him and starts her own constellation.
"hey abby, you should ask your parents if you can go to the park with me on saturday! momma says she'll take me to the one with the spiderweb!" abby looks up to see drew with his big chocolate eyes watching her hand carefully. "cool! ill ask my dad when i get home!" she finishes her constellation, "ill call it spiderweb."
-----
abby runs to dad's big red truck and knocks on the passenger door. her dad comes around the the passenger door and helps her into the tall seat. "hi daddy!" he kisses the top of her head, "hello angel!" he buckles her in and starts down the road. "how does an ice cream cone sound?" abby's eyes widen, "very good!" dad chuckles and pulls into the mcdonalds drive thru to order two ice cream cones.
they wait behind a small green car for a long time. dad sighs flips on the radio. "hey daddy, can i go to the park with drew on saturday? his mom is taking him to the spiderman park!" dad's eyebrows are sewn together quickly, like abby has seen when grammy sews her quilts. "drews the black kid right?" abby nods. dad starts to say something, but stops quickly. "no. im sorry sweetie, but id rather you not see drew outside of school."
abby frowns, "why?" dad looks at abby with a stern look, "you just cant. okay? the end. no seeing the black kid outside of school." abby nods and looks down at her pink jelly shoes which seem less bright as usual, "okay."
