"...and just to think next year you won't even need me to drop you off at your birthday parties anymore- you'll be driving yourself!" momma finishes with a gulp, holding back her tears. drew leans over the car and gives her a squeeze, "it's okay."momma sniffs and shakes her head, "of course it is. i'm fine," she pulls into the sports park parking lot and parks. drew eyes the huge crowd of teenagers.
holy crap.
momma squeezes his hand, "happy birthday baby." drew thanks her, "and i won't grow up too fast you know. you'll always have someone around."
mommas eyes go to her hands and her nods, "yeah of course... real quick question. how would you feel about me dating?"
drew chuckles but stops when he sees she's not laughing, "oh seriously?"
she squints and nods, "seriously." drew shakes his head, "uhhh yeah sure. whatever makes you happy..." she smiles and wipes her tears, "okay. now go and have fun."
drew jumps out and waves as she drives away, what the hell just happened AHHhhh
drew feels someone leap onto his back and hollers, "three cheers for the birthday boy!" henry slides down his back and turn him around. the gigantic group of his schoolmates all gather around him to yell and shout and applaud.
drew gives henry a big hug, "dude who the hell are all these people?" he shouts over the group and the music playing. henry smiles from ear to ear, "who knows man but look at em, they love you!"
the group breaks off and goes back to the pizza and dancing in the soccer field. suzy taps drews shoulder, "hello birthday boy, you're welcome!" drew laughs, "thank you, both of you so much. this is insane!"
henry pinches his shoulder before running to talk to oliver and trevor. did abby come...?
suzy grabs drews hand and pulls him to face her, "so do you really like it?" drew shakes his head in astonishment, "yes! how could i not? this is crazy!" suzy's face scrunches into a little smile. drew sees her gaze drift to his lips and then back up to his eyes.
ah jeez not again this is so weirddddddd
suzy leans in and kisses him. drew tenses up every muscle until she pulls away and smiles. drew forces a smile as to not hurt her feelings. "come on let's dance!"
drew scrambled to think of an excuse not to, "hold on i'll meet you over there! i need to use the bathroom." she nods and runs to join in dancing to a justin timberlake song.
who chose this crap music jeez.
drew files through the crowd of rowdy kids trying to find henry to get advice. drew feels a tap on his shoulder, "i'll be over there in a minute suz- oh! hi," he turns around to see abby.
she had obviously tried to cover her freckles with makeup today and her hair was straightened, but she was wearing her star wars shirt drew had gotten her in the fourth grade.
"you still have it!" drews eyes widen at the sight of the worn out empire strikes back shirt from so many years ago. abby nods and hugs him, "happy birthday man! it's insane how fast its been - life i mean!"
drew laughs and shakes his head, "i know! we've been through a lot though.." him and abby both become quiet at the thought of the recent years they've been separated.
drew hold his hand out for hers. her speckled hand in his dark hand, he says, "i've missed you old friend." she forces a smile through the pain. he does the same.
they hug one last time.
