drew hops from rock to rock alongside clayton on the park's sidewalk. "why can't abby hang out with you out of school?" clayton asks drew as he holds his hand up to block the scorching sun. "her dad doesn't like black people. but i do get to go to her birthday parties," drew sighs, landing on a flat rock. he steps back onto the sidewalk to walk along clayton's wheelchair."i don't understand that. i mean, we're all human. you're just darker," clayton shakes his head confused. drew nods in agreement, and you are a lot lighter. and have squintier eyes.
"hey, who do you like? do you have a crush on anyone?" clayton wonders out loud. drew stops in his track, eyebrows knitted together, "uh, why? i mean - i don't think so." clayton turns around and shrugs, "just wondering. do you have a crush on abby?"
drew lets out a loud singular laugh, "hah - no! sh-she's my best friend! i wouldn't... like her..." clayton nods, "okay," and turns back around to continue down the sidewalk. drew runs to catch up with him, "wait do you have a crush on any girls?" clayton giggles, "no."
