Chapter 7

"With me? Something to do with me?" I said nervously, pointing to myself.

He nodded slowly. "that's what I said, isn't it?"

"How come?" I said quickly.

He shrugged. "Something, I don't know, makes me feel better when I hang out with you. I like knowing you care about me."

I felt a happy feeling in my stomach, but not just my stomach, my heart too.

"That's what I've been thinking about all weekend." he mumbled, before smiling at me.

"That means a lot, Luke, wow." I moved off of the couch to sit next to him on the floor.

He played with my fingers, looking at them intently. I laughed at him being so interested in my fingers.

"Do you bite your nails?" he asked quietly, examining each finger.

"A little bit, I know I should stop," i said, looking back up. "it's a nervous habit."

Luke nodded slowly, letting go of my hand before sitting up. "Lets go to the park."

"But I'm grounded." I said, looking at him quickly.

"Come on, Sky, live a little." He stood up, grabbing my hand and dragging me to the door.

"What if Hannah finds out, Luke?" I followed quickly behind him. It was getting warmer out, which meant summer was closely coming.

"She won't, you'll be home in time." He smiled, his eyes squinting from the sun.

We walked a couple blocks to the playground. There wasn't really anyone here except for a few boys on the basketball court and little kids on the playground.

"Hey Luke!" One of the boys on the basketball courts called out.

"Oh shit." Luke's smile faded.

I gave him a look "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, uh, just come with me and don't say anything, okay?" I nodded slowly and followed behind Luke. "Hey Brent."

"Well, well, who's the girl?" he looked me up and down, making me feel smaller. All these boys, including Luke, were taller than me.

"This is Skylar." Luke stated, quickly wrapping his hand in mine. I looked down at our hands, confused. He's never held me hand, no one really has.

"Is she your girlfriend?" The boy Brent asked. His hair was dark brown and he had thick eyebrows, with a square jawline. Defiantly not my type.

"Yeah, she is." Luke said. my head snapped towards him, where he looked back at me. He gave me a look, saying please act along , so I did. I leaned a little closer to him with a small smile.

"Surprising, never thought you could actually get someone to like you." Brent smirked before turning around and tossing a ball to his friend.

"What did he just say?" I snapped, looking at Luke.

"It's nothing, don't worry." Luke said back.

I sighed "No, Luke, I will worry," I let got of his hand and went over to Brent. I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned to me.

"Don't you ever say something like that to Luke or anyone ever again." I snapped at him.

He rolled his eyes. "Get out of here."

I shook my head. "Who the hell do you think you are, okay? You don't say that to people."

"Why are you sticking up for him? He's an fucking emo freak."

Before I realized what I was doing, I pulled my hand up and slapped him across the face.

"Leave him alone." I whispered as he grabbed his face in pain before walking back over to Luke. I grabbed his hand and pulled him behind me.

"Skylar, what was that?" Luke asked once we got out of the park

"Nothing." I stated, still furious.

"It obviously wasn't, you just slapped him,"

"Listen, Luke, how long has he been bothering you?" I stopped and turned around.

"A long time." Luke shrugged.

I tapped my foot. "Well, I didn't like it. Don't let people do that to you, please."

We continued walking in silence until we made it to my apartment.

"Well, thank you, Skylar," Luke said, slightly smiling. "it means a lot."

"It was nothing, really, he deserved it." I said looking down.

Luke leaned in, kissing me on the cheek. The metal from his lip ring was cold, compared to my cheek, which was heating up with blush.

Before I knew it, he pulled away, waved awkwardly, and walked down the street towards his house.
