Chapter 8

"Skylar, where's Luke?' Calum and Iris walked up to me. I was sitting on a bench outside the school. I was supposed to go to Luke's house, but I haven't seen him all day.

"I don't know, I haven't seen him." I sighed. Calum looked worried, but Iris seemed confused.

"Damn it," Calum whispered. "Well, if you do hear from him, let me know."

I nodded as he grabbed Iris' hand and walked away. I haven't heard from Luke since he kissed my cheek on Saturday night. I've texted him twice, but he hasn't answered.

I sighed again, picking up my bag and going across the parking lot to my car. I drove home and decided to do my homework and sneak over to Luke's house as soon as I was done.

"Hey Sky." Hannah walked into the apartment.

"Hi" I said, tapping my pencil. I only had a few problems for math left.

"Do you think you could help me?" She looked over at me.

"It depends." I said, slowly looking over to her.

She opened her purse "I'm supposed to go out tonight, with some people from work. Could you help me get an outfit picked out?"

I sighed "can't you do it yourself?"

"I just wanted your opinion," she stepped over to me. "Please?"

I sighed, closing my book. "Fine, whatever."

I followed her to her room, and after about ten minutes of debating, she agreed to a casual black dress and her red heels. I looked at the time, and it was almost six.

"Oh, uhm, Hannah? I need to go to Luke's house." Her head snapped towards me.

"Why?" She moved a piece of blonde hair from her eyelashes, narrowing her eyes. "You're still grounded."

"I know, I know," I stated. "But he wasn't at school, I wanted to make sure he's okay."

"I don't know if I should trust you."

"Please, Hannah, I'm begging you." I looked at her with big eyes, slightly pouting out my bottom lip.

"Fine, be home by eleven."

I balanced a pizza on my palm, using my other hand to try and knock on the door. I waited a couple moments, and no one opened the door.

I rang the doorbell, looking over to try and peek in the window. The lights were all off except for one on the staircase.

"Skylar, what are you doing here?" I turned around to see Calum.

"I was going to check on Luke," I turned around. "what are you doing here? I thought you were with Iris."

"She went home, I wanted to see Luke," he looked at the pizza. "What kind of pizza is that?"

"Pepperoni, and he isn't opening the door."

"Maybe he's sleeping." Calum shrugged, looking into the cloudy door window before opening the mailbox and pulling out a key. He unlocked the door and we went inside.

We put the pizza in the kitchen and made our way to his room upstairs.

"Luke, are you awake?" Calum knocked on the door lightly, then true to turn the door knob. It wouldn't budge.

"Unlock the door, Luke." Calum said. His face turned to a totally different expression.

"Luke?" I said, knocking harder. "Luke, open up, please." I pleaded. The feeling in my stomach was back.

Calum threw himself at the door a few times, trying to break it open. Finally, he got it.

The world seemed to go in slow motion as I walked in, looking at him, holding a bottle of pills, pouring them into his hand.
