'Why do I even trust this guy?' ran through her mind as she spent almost an hour talking about how she had let her life fall apart. After the first couple of minutes, they slowly started walking along the empty street without any destination.
He was a great listener, letting her speak without interruption. He didn't make any sounds, just nodded or looked at her when she stopped talking for a second, just to reassure her he was still listening. After some time, he took her hand, squeezing it in reassurance. They kept their hands entwined for the rest of the walk, just revelling in the comfort of another's touch.
She told him about her mom leaving, how her dad had been drinking his nights away and smoking his lungs black ever since. She told him about all of those sleepless nights she had spent wandering around the woods calling for her mom, about all the days she had spent avoiding her friends thus losing all of them. She talked about trying to make friends with people at high school and about her inability to do so. She confessed that the only reason she was working a part time job was because she couldn't bear a thought of being alone in her house or spending time with her dad.
"And your boyfriend is your classmate or a co-worker?" he asked after she was done talking.
"What boyfriend? I don't even have one," she asked, confusion tinting her voice.
"Well you said a male name and then went silent right after, so I assumed," he gave her a shy smirk as he looked into her eyes, making it hard for her to focus on anything else.
"Oh, Cal... he is my co-worker. And he is a friend of mine. I went silent because, well, he is my only friend..." she confessed, embarrassment colouring her cheeks with a soft shade of pink as she turned her gaze down to her feet. She felt him pulling them both to a stop before placing himself in front of her, releasing her hand.
She looked up and was just about to ask what he was doing when he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in for a tight hug. She sighed with relief the hug brought her and laid her head on his chest, listening to the same, incorrect heart beat as she had been having ever since the abduction...
