They shouldn't have come home. They knew the hunt for their heads was still open. But they were done with running, done with hiding. They had lost so much trying to win this fight, the hole left behind was too grave to fix. All that was left was a wish for revenge, even if it meant dying in the process.
Claire held her hand and squeezed it. They were standing in the hallway of Aisha's home. It seemed that they were surrounded by nothing but silence but they knew they were coming. They had nowhere to go from here. Alina was standing away from the couple, in the darker corner of the room. She was silent, waiting.
Finally, they heard the footsteps. They were here. Claire lifted up her gun and so did Aisha. They both knew it was pointless but it made it seem like they were not going without a fight. Aisha glanced to the other side of the room and saw Alina with her gun ready, tears slowly running down her face. She knew she was going to die. In that moment, the brunette wished they would have left her in New Zealand. She didn't want to come with them to begin with.
"Aisha, it's too dangerous," she whined. "I don't want to leave Jay buried here and leave," was the next argument. "You left Lucas in France without a problem," Aisha groaned, knowing she was just trying to get to her through her feelings. But she was done and Claire agreed with her. "Let's finish this."
So they had forced her to go back home with them, to the house Aisha had lived in for most of her life. To the house they will now all die in. How foolish to think they could escape, have a normal life. They shouldn't have left in the first place. They should have known better. There was no way to hide from the monsters that were inside of them, nowhere to run to.
The house that she once called home provided the perfect place for their enemies to trap them in. Aisha wanted to die at home. She got her wish.
"Sounds like we got a one way ticket to hell," Claire whispered, smiling sadly down at her girlfriend. "I'll meet you there," she smiled in response. "I love you," Claire whispered.
The doors swung open and the gunshots cracked into the air as loud as thunder but without the raw power of a storm. In comparison they were metallic and small, coming from one direction only, aiming directly at them. Aisha fired at the first figure she had spotted, he dropped dead seconds later. Still shocked at her own action, she turned around to face her killer. He shot a single bullet that penetrated her lungs.
She started falling towards the ground, but it felt like it was happening in a slow motion. Silence returned far more thickly than it was before the shots, as if everything around her was collectively holding its breath. But no one was holding a breath, no one was being silent, she could see people around her yelling but she didn't hear them. She hit the floor with one last gasp.
Finally, her mind slept
