"Aisha?" a familiar voice called her name and dragged her out of her numbness.
"Jess," she nodded, looking up to face Caleb's twin sister. Her wavy flaming red hair was falling on her face, gently touching her pale cheeks that were wet from all the tears that were still falling from her deep blue eyes. Caleb's eyes.
"Shame he had to die to get your attention," she said quietly, closing her eyes to stop more tears from falling. She failed.
"I'm so sorry Jess," Aisha whispered, her chest tightening as she choked on the last syllable.
In that moment, Claire walked in looking as flawless and fierce as ever.
"Aisha, babe, why didn't you call me?" she asked gently, rushing closer and cupping her face with her hands. "I'm very sorry for your loss," she added before pulling her in for a hug.
"I need to see Jay, Claire. Can you figure out where he is?" Aisha looked at her, after Claire had released her, her eyes begging. "Now how could I possibly do that?" she smirked in response, taking her hand. "I'll drive you to him. He is not in the best state of mind, but he accepted that you are the only one who can keep him in check. He also already accepted that Caleb is dead and he is dealing with it," she said, walking her out of the hospital.
"How did you-"Aisha stared, confusion and awe tinting her voice as she followed the beauty to her car, leaving Jess alone to deal with the doctors. "How powerful really are you?"
"There are some advantages if you are born with it, you know. And also, I'm 167 years old. I had a lot of practice. And yes of course I went to see Jay; he could be a danger to all of us if someone didn't go to check up on him. And also, someone had to convince him you are his best option or he wouldn't let you go near him. He is too scared of hurting you," she told her as she started driving her away from the hospital. Before Aisha would be able to ask what made her think she even wanted to be near him, Clare continued with a soft voice. "How are you holding up?"
"I haven't really talked to him in a year. A year. And now I'm the reason he is dead. Maybe it's better than him surviving this. He could have been crippled for life, maybe physically, most likely mentally. And he would still be in danger, he knew too much. But he wouldn't want to get away from us, from me. He loved me, you know? If I got back with Jay...and if Caleb was hanging out with us, it would hurt him a lot. Maybe it's better this way. I'm rambling, I'm sorry. I'm just trying to find a reason behind this. He was one of the good guys, you know? He didn't deserve to die like this. He didn't deserve it at all," she cut herself off, unable to stop the onslaught of the pain threatening to swallow her whole.
Claire let her get lost in her own thoughts until she pulled the car to a stop. "Aisha, we are here."
"An abandoned prison where they kept me a few months back. I do appreciate the irony," Aisha groaned, finding her way to the cell they kept her in. If Claire was surprised by the information, she didn't show it, simply humming in acknowledgement as she trailed behind her. Aisha appreciated her presence; it was calming and commanding both at once. Somehow, it made her feel safe.
There he was, sitting on the bed. "It still smells like you if I try hard enough," he smiled as she approached him. She felt nauseous but chanced a smile.
"Are you going to let me to take you home now?" she whispered, despite every cell of her body telling her to leave without him. He killed Caleb.
"Home?" she heard his pained voice and decided to ignore the sinking feeling in her gut, telling her this was a horrible idea. "My place," she forced a smile as she stood up. "You coming?"
He nodded, standing up as well, walking out of the cell. Aisha's gaze travelled to Claire who quirked a brow. The brunette just shrugged uselessly, making the beautiful killer chuckle. The sight nearly made her lose her footing but she regained her balance, hoping Claire wouldn't notice her struggle as she supressed a groan. It was going to be a long ride.
It felt like hours before they reached Aisha's house and say goodbye to Claire. "If you need anything, just think of me very strongly. I'll know," she said softly, before driving away, leaving the two former lovers alone.
