You'll know when the past starts to haunt you when you start to feel regrets buried deep in the darkest of your guts. That stirring feeling when you just can't close your eyes without imagining their smile, their figure, their touch.
Ron laid his back down on the grass after the party had ended, Harry was with Ginny at the common room, and Ron? well let's just say everything was too much for him to take. He let out a heavy heave, as he tried to erase traces of Hermione out of his way.
He had to admit he loved her. But she was never really his for the taking.
That wasn't only his problem: Lavender had already suffered enough damage she barely even made it out alive. Ron survived, but was he really satisfied?
He closed his eyes, regretting her death, and regretting the life he has without Hermione. He had given Hermione away to someone she really loved. The person who was meant for her from day one. the horcrux was right. Who could ever love someone like me? he thought. Tears started to salt down from his eyes, dampening his red eyelashes, and down to his freckly temples. his hands had sweat, and his chest rose.
Hermione had him, but he never had her.
Ron had to let it go.
Only this time it was hard to accept it; to face it, and to take the truth that she will always be his best friend.

Hermione then brought the bouquet of flowers she was given, as she walked along the corridors with the moon light to brighten her trails. The short heels of her shoes clicked along the concrete floors, holding the card on the other hand.
She hoped that she wasn't late again. She hoped that he wouldn't run away hopelessly. Hermione bit her lip, heading towards the set of spiral stairs up to the astronomy tower. Her heart started beating faster, and sweat were prominent on the sides of her face, panting as Hermione hurried to the top.
But before she could even reach the tower, she heard a voice; a familiar voice in which she had known for quite some time.
"Little town, it's a quiet village" he whispered the lyrics to her favourite song, sending shivers all over her spine, her lips twitching in awe.
She peeked through before she could even go up, watching him looking out from the tower, his finger tracing the railings of the tower and waiting for Hermione to arrive.
"Everyday, just like the ones before..." She listened to him with a smile curling up on her lips. He still remembers the song. She told herself, with her eyes start to glisten along the starry night.
"Little town, full of little people," he continued as he sighed, looking down as if he was ready to give up and leave.
"Waking up to say" Hermione sang, standing behind him, as he was startled at the response he was given, even though he was expecting her anyway. She was holding the bouquet of flowers in her hand, and basically on her two feet, standing right in front of him. He let out a soft smile.
And then everything came haunting back. Memories of Hermione. Flashbacks of her little smile. She was sweet, and she still is.

That very same night, Ron was on his way back to the gryffindor common room, and to think he was just starting to feel okay right after taking a breathe down at the courtyard, when he saw her, blocking the stairway, facing behind him. Unaware that he heard his footsteps.
