The past

Kailey's pov

Flashback, the day of the attempted escape

"Derek, hurry! It won't be long until they realize we're gone!" Derek and I were running away from the fortress that had held up prisoners for the past three years. We were so close! Just a few more yards and we would be free!

"AHHH!" I fell to the ground, a net immobilizing me. I heard Derek fall a few feet away from me, and when I looked over at him he was unconscious on the ground. I felt something sharp on the back of my neck and the last thing I saw was a pair of boots walking towards me.

Sometime later

Derek's pov

We failed. It was just a matter of time before we received our punishments. I had woken up a while ago, but Kailey was still fast asleep. I didn't know what they had given her, but it was obviously a strong dose. I hope she wakes up soon, I can't stand watching her like this. Creeek. David walked into our small prison, I tried to jump at him but the chains on my arms stopped me.

"Ha, little Derek trying to play the hero. Look where it got you." He walked over to Kailey and started to pet her hair.

"Don't touch her," I growled, pulling against the chains with all my might. All he did was laugh. He took a needle out of his pocket and stuck it in Kailey's neck. She slowly started to wake up, and as soon as she saw David she threw a punch. He jumped back, obviously shocked at how quickly she regained her senses.

"Well, is that any way to treat the hand that feeds you?" He snapped his fingers and the chains holding her started to go into the wall, making it so she couldn't move. Once her arms were secure he went up and ran his fingers on her face. She growled and tried to bite him. He

Chuckled and walked back to the center of the room. "Look at this, you two thought you could escape me. How stupid are you?"

"Not as stupid as you," I snarled, glaring at him.

"You're not in the best position to be throwing insults around, are you?" He gave me a long, hard look before turning to look at Kailey. "You, I can't believe you! I kept you away from all those who wanted you for their own, and you repay my kindness trying to escape. Since you obviously don't appreciate it, I've decided to sell you. You fetch quite the price, apparently your very pleasing to look at. As soon as I find a price I like, you'll be on your way."

"No! Please don't, you know what they'll do to her! Sell me instead. I'm sure I'll fetch a decent price. I'm a teenager who can lift three times his weight, that has to be worth something. Please, I'll do anything," I was begging, the chains holding me groaning as I pulled with all my might, trying to reach Kailey so I could protect her.

"Aww, look at you, trying to be a hero. How about this, I'll sell you in her place. But before I do that, I have a few serums I need to test. I think you can see what I'm getting at." He did the hideous smirk he did whenever things went his way. Before either of us could respond, two guards entered the room and plunged needles into Kailey's and my necks.

A few weeks later

Third pov

Kailey and Derek had gone through weeks of different serums being put into their systems. David finally decided he was tired of this and hooked them up to the machine. The machine was created to alter memories so David could do whatever he wanted without anyone doing anything. If someone caught him, off to the machine they went. For Kailey, he knew that if made her think Derek betrayed her she wouldn't attempt an escape again. He altered the day of the escape and erased all of the past few weeks. Derek was a little more complicated. As long as he knew Kailey was alive he would try to help her. The only way to make it so he never returned was to make him think she was dead. He kept everything the same, except instead of the weeks of experiments David changed it so Derek was sold in Kailey's place. Derek escaped but only to watch David kill Kailey. "That should do it." David releases Derek and Kailey remained in his clutches. Little did he know that all the drugs and serums had given both Derek and Kailey powers, powers that he would come to fear.
