He was suffering from pain right now, after having a dragon Hunter arrow cut through his leg, his bad leg.
He told everyone that he was fine, but he wasn't.
The pain was driving Hiccup over the edge.
It was agony. A searing pain that seemed to numb the rest of his body except for the source; it made his eyes squint shut and strangled screams restrict in his throat as he tried to fight it down, trying desperately not to look weak.
But then he felt the tears falling down his face and he knew that he couldn't hold on any longer; this was it, this pain was going to destroy him, consume him and he'd be left mindless, insane...
Then he felt a hand pulling at his and he realised that someone was holding it up to his face, warm breath brushing his skin as he gave his fingers gentle kisses. He felt drops of water falling onto his palm and realised; his cheeks were wet as well.
He managed to open his eyes at least half-way, his vision blurring until a blonde girl finally came into focus, holding his hand tightly as she nuzzled it. He could see her lips moving silently and he realised she was praying, not just to the gods but to anyone who could help him get through this pain; Please don't let him go, I need him...
He squeezed her hand and blue eyes opened with a soft gasp, meeting his just before he fell back into another wave of pain.
She stayed with him all night, holding his hand and giving him gentle kisses, whispering in his ear reassuringly and wrapping him in an embrace that dulled the pain.
And when morning came, when both of them opened their eyes, their gazes met and Hiccup knew.
He knew that he would have gone mad without Astrid by his side; his link and bridge to sanity.
She was a shield that protected him.
For now, and forever.
