Hiccup was sitting on a rock in the sand, as he watched Toothless standing in the shallow water, trying to catch fish. He had no idea for how long he had been trying out the new tail. It had worked perfectly, but Hiccup would probably give it a few adjustments later, to give it his own tint of Hiccup.
"Gettin' anything?" he asked the dragon, which lifted up his head to look at him in disappointment.
"Keep going, I'm sure you'll catch some, if you just keep trying."
Toothless continued watching the water, as Hiccup looked around a bit. The shore was his favorite place to be. The sandy beach with big rocks that you could sit on, and the rocky wall behind him, that stopped the strong winds from the sea, Hiccup loved it all. He even had a clear view at the docks from here. Vikings were carrying things to and from the boats all day, and when the dock started becoming less crowded, Hiccup knew that it was getting late. For that moment, there were still a few Vikings out there, carrying around things, but they were a lot less than in the day.
Suddenly Hiccup realized something, and took out the paper sheet with his notes, from his pocket. He put his finger on the last note, "Astrid ????" He had completely forgotten about it. "Shoot!" he hissed, and stood up, looking at Toothless who didn't budge from his fishing. "Toothless?" Hiccup asked hesitantly, not wanting to interrupt the dragon.
"We gotta go now." he explained, but got no apparent response from the dragon.
"Come on!" he tried, but the dragon wouldn't budge.
"Okay, fine! I'll come get you soon!" He had no time to explain any more to Toothless, so he just left the Night Fury alone, and hurried back to the village.
Hiccup shoved the paper sheet back into his pocket, as he walked quickly. He passed a few Vikings that called out their greetings, as usual. He responded them all with a smile, before hurrying on. He didn't stop until he stood in front of Astrid's door.
Hiccup hardly ever visited Astrid's house, and the times he did, he would just knock the door, and wait for someone to open it. Astrid was quite the opposite when she came to visit him. She just walked straight in, knowing that neither Stoick nor Hiccup had anything against it. Hiccup and Astrid never spent time indoors, so it was a bit exciting to go get one another.
The wooden door opened with a squeak, and Astrid appeared in the doorway.
"Hey!" she said eagerly.
"I was sure that you weren't going to show up."
"Yeah, well, there's been a lot going on today." Hiccup explained.
"I'll just go get Stormfly, all right?" Astrid said, passing the brown-haired boy, as she closed the door behind her.
"No, that's not necessary!" Hiccup said, grabbing her hand. Astrid looked at him, confusedly.
"Come on!" he said, pulling her slightly. They started walking towards the shore, where Hiccup had left Toothless.
The number of Vikings working at the docks had decreased as Hiccup had gone to get Astrid, which meant that it was getting late. That wasn't what worried Hiccup, though. What worried him was that Toothless was gone. "W-where's Toothless?!" Hiccup exclaimed. The beach was empty, no dragon was around.
"But I left him here! Where could he have gone? I was only away for a few minutes!"
"Are you sure that he didn't go back to the house?" Astrid asked.
"He might have…" Hiccup said with a low voice. Oh, great. His last plans for the day were already screwing up.
"Let's go there." Hiccup said, and the two youngsters hurried back to the village, once again.
Hiccup pushed open the front door with a slam.
"Toothless?!" he called into the house, but there was no sign of life. Neither Stoick, nor Toothless were at home yet.
"Where is that useless reptile?!" Hiccup exclaimed, mostly to himself.
"I'll go get Stormfly, okay?" Astrid said, while patting Hiccup's back, trying to comfort him.
"We'll fly out and search for him." she said, and ran away from the house.
Hiccup leaned against the door frame.
"I had everything figured out! Why would that stupid dragon run away at a time like this?! Toothless never runs away! What could've gotten him to do it now?!" Hiccup spoke to himself, as if it helped somehow.
Suddenly Hiccup heard wing beats from outside, and he turned around, thinking it was Toothless, but it wasn't. It was Astrid who had brought her Deadly Nadder, so that they could go out searching for Toothless. Hiccup climbed the dragon, behind Astrid, and they were off towards the forest. It was the most conceivable place for Toothless to go.
Hiccup lost count of how many times they flew around the forest, in search for Toothless. The dragon's dark color made it even harder to find it in the darkness. Stormfly had landed at the edge of the forest. The teenagers were trying to figure out where Toothless could be.
"I know one place!" Hiccup suddenly exclaimed
"the cove"
"We've passed it several times tonight, Hiccup." Astrid said.
"Can we at least go try there?"
Astrid sighed and looked at the dragon they were riding on. She looked exhausted, but Astrid knew that she would have the strength to carry them to the cove.
"Okay, fine." she agreed, and steered Stormfly into the forest again.
"Toothless?"
Hiccup called out, but there wasn't any other sound than his own footsteps, and the breaths of Astrid and her dragon.
"He isn't here, Hiccup. We gotta get back to the village. We can search tomorrow, okay?" Astrid said, but Hiccup didn't respond.
"Hiccup? Are you listening?"
"Ssh!" Hiccup shushed, and Astrid stopped talking immediately. She listened. She wasn't sure if it was her imagination, but she thought that she could hear low purring sounds from somewhere.
"You hear that?" Hiccup whispered.
Astrid nodded, even though Hiccup couldn't see it. "Toothless?" Hiccup called.
Astrid wasn't sure what happened, but the next second was filled by Hiccups screaming, as if something attacked him.
"Hiccup!" Astrid exclaimed, running towards his screaming.
"No! No, stop it! No, get off!" Hiccup cried.
"Hiccup! Are you okay?!" Astrid asked, stopping right beside him.
"I'm better than ever!" Hiccup said. Astrid could hear him sitting up.
"We found him."
Astrid smiled.
"We did? Where is he?"
"Reach out your hand." Hiccup said in a low voice. Astrid did, and her fingers touched Toothless' wing, almost immediately. She realized how close they had been all the time. Hiccup laughed.
"What have you been doing here, Toothless?"
The Night Fury walked away from the boy and the girl, and they could hear it purring again. "What've you got there?" Hiccup asked, and got up.
He started walking towards the dragon's sound. Suddenly he stepped on something squishy. "Oh, Toothless!" he exclaimed, and started laughing.
"You came all this way to fish?!"
Astrid stayed where they had been the moment before. "Stormfly, come here." she spoke, and you could hear the footsteps of the Deadly Nadder, coming closer. Astrid started walking towards the direction she heard Hiccup's voice, her dragon following her. She held out her hands, to feel for things she might walk into. Astrid was surprised when she felt the rocky wall in the palms of her hands. "Hiccup, where did you go?" she asked. She got no answer. "Hiccup, I swear I'm going to kill you if you're trying to scare me."
"Turn around." she heard his breath in her ear. She turned around immediately, and tried to hit Hiccup that was standing behind her the second before, but only succeeded to do an air punch, as there was no one.
"Hiccup, you know I hate when you do this! This is as stupid as those notes you had written!" she complained.
"It was just a sheet of paper." she felt his whisper in her ear again. She quickly turned around and punched into the darkness, missing again.
"You do know that I make notes of my work days?" once again, his whisper was in her ear, from behind.
This time, she didn't turn around.
"I have to have a schedule of how long activities take."
Suddenly there was a sound of a wing beat over her head, and suddenly Hiccups voice was heard a few feet away.
"But whenever I'm with you… time stands still. That's why question marks are needed on paper sheets."
Astrid stood still, where she was, expecting him to appear behind her any second.
"Come here, Astrid." he whispered suddenly.
Astrid started walking, holding her hands out. She took only a few steps, before her hands touched a familiar face.
"Hiccup, what the–!" she exclaimed, but suddenly two hands took a hold of her neck, and Hiccup's familiar lips crushed onto hers. As they parted, she slapped him, caused the boy to yelp.
"That was for scaring me!"
Hiccup sighed, thinking it was typical Astrid to do this.
"So, I'm hanging here upside down for–", Hiccup spoke, but was interrupted by Astrid kissing him again.
"And that was for having a great schedule."
