Astrid hadn't known what to think when Hiccup had asked her to go stargazing with him.
Of all things, stargazing? Her? Seriously?
But seeing the excited glint in the boy's eyes was just too much for her, and so she'd gone along with him to the hill he'd chosen for the occasion, wearing an unsure look that matched her feelings.
"Hey, I found out that you can make shapes sometimes, if you join up patches of stars..." Hiccup's eyes were focused on the heavens above as they both lay on their backs, studying the diamond-studded blanket above them.
Astrid didn't know what to say, so she merely mumbled "oh." and followed the direction of his gaze, trying to see if she could work out what he was on about.
"You mean like... there?" She raised a hand to point at a circle of stars idly, trying not to yawn.
Fingers wrapped themselves around her palm gently and she blinked, watching as he carefully moved her hand to make a pattern in the sky.
"I think that one looks kind of like a bear... Don't you think?" He glanced over at her and she looked back.
She nodded and glanced back towards the sky again, frowning as he went to pull his hand away, grabbing it with a stubborn air and entwining her fingers with his as their hands came to rest inbetween them.
"Yeah, I think it does too." Astrid almost whispered, afraid of breaking the silence that came with the sky.
Hiccup didn't reply, and the two of them lay for a while, enjoying each other's company and gently squeezing hands every so often as they gazed into the night sky.
It was only when a bright spark shot a trail across the sky that they sat up, staring in awe.
"It's a shooting star from the gods themselves..." Hiccup mumbled as they watched the light fade out of sight, leaving a glowing path in its wake.
Astrid glanced at him.
"You're supposed to make a wish, you know." Hiccup blinked and then glanced down at their linked hands, a content smile spreading on his face.
"I don't need to wish for anything, Astrid... I already have all that I want."
