On Lucy's eighteenth birthday, she received a package from Peter. He must have sent it weeks before to ensure that it arrived at her university on her birthday. She removed the card from the front and read her brother's sloppy script, "After you letters about your most recent trip, I stumbled upon this most interesting book. I knew I had to get it to you. Love, Peter. " She smiled fondly at her brother's consideration and set the card aside. The package was plainly wrapped, a medium sized book. She opened it to reveal a withered book, making her wonder where he had come across such a treasure.
Salt-Water Poems and Ballads
Lucy felt her heart soften both for her brother's kindness and her longing for Narnia and the Dawn Treader. She flipped open to a page at random.
Sea Fever.
Lucy read the poem and let the words wash over her like the tide. I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky. The first line alone gave her shivers. She felt the desperate pull on her soul to visit her glistening Eastern Sea- was it missing her just as she missed it? Was it lonely without its queen to visit and play in the waves and walk upon the sands?
All I ask is a tall ship and star to steer her by…
Lucy dreamt of the Dawn Treader, of exploring the sea until the end of the world; the days of sunshine and the spray of the sea- the starlit nights when she and Caspian would sit and talk.
Her heart gave a painful twist. How she missed him? How she longed to be safe in his arms, to hear his laugh, to feel his rough lips upon hers.
She dare not tell Peter or anyone of what had considered between Caspian and her. The stolen glances and kisses that left her breathless yet wanting to be so- those were her secret. Those moments were her dreams when she was lonely, her thoughts when she was sad. The love they shared, no matter how briefly, is what kept Lucy's spirits up in the cold world of England.
She settled in a chair in the corner of her dorm, opening the book from the very beginning. A bookmark with Peter's script fell out. We will be having a discussion about this when we met again.
Lucy furrowed her brows, confused until she noticed another script on the inner cover of the book.
My most darling Lucy,
This book reminded me of you.
All my love,
Caspian
