Memories in May

It was a Tuesday afternoon

Towards the end of May

When my mind began to play

Memories from yesterday

''Twas in these memories I was younger

And my soul was lighter, my smile was brighter

My loved ones nearer,

My friends were closer,

No cares were in my fresher mind

No worries hung about my shoulders

And when my mind began to play

That nostalgic, but melancholy tune

I found myself wondering

What became of her?

That child, so free and young

Who was not afraid to speak the truth

Who's dreams were bold and endless?

Did she vanish beneath the disapproving words

And accusing looks with no answers to her questions?

No.

A part of me whispers

No, you are not gone

That freedom I still seek for is still there

And so are the dreams,

But along the way I've forgotten

What it means to be myself,

What it means to live

And what it means to love

And just like that my mind is no more playing

Words from yesterday

Instead it begins to merrily sing

A song of today, the present, the future

One Tuesday afternoon in May.
