Towards the end of her visit Mel decided that Helga needed a companion. I knew nothing of this until they came home with a Jack Russell puppy. The puppy stole my heart and gave me something to do. I set out to train him and he took to it readily. It was training his owner that was the hardest. Helga could not muster the commanding voice the puppy listened to. She would often forget to make him sit and stay as she opened the door to take him out. It was so frustrating to watch this well-behaved puppy go completely out of control when Helga took him. It made me angry that Helga disregarded my instruction on how to command him. She would scold him and swat his nose when he misbehaved and I inwardly cringed. I was an animal lover and believed there was never a reason to strike an animal.

After a very long three weeks her mom and the puppy left "Mel's house." When I checked our accounts, I was horrified to see that Mel had wiped out our savings. I confronted her with angry indignance. Her rage at my questioning her quickly overpowered my own anger and I was cowed. I set out to build the savings up again.
