"Come on Evie, let's get to school please!" I some what begged my six year old child, as I stood by the door with her lunch, my lunch, her coat, my coat, her bag and my bag.
"But I'm still playing horses Mammy!" She replied, sat in our tiny living room playing with the toy horses that used to belong to me.
"I know baby, but it's time to go to school, we can play them later, don't want to be late for your first day in Year 1!" I reasoned, waiting for the fairly inevitable breakdown.
"But I want to play them now mam, daddy would've let me." She whined, tears threatening to slip from her perfect brown eyes. His eyes.
"He wouldn't've babe, he knew how much school means, he's not here anyway baba, now come here and give mama a hug and we'll get in our way ok, I promise you can play with horses as much as you like after school and if you've been really good maybe we can go and get ice cream." I reasoned again, putting all of the stuff on the floor, crouching down and opening my arms for my world.
Carefully she put down the beloved toys and came over to me, hugging me tight, crying into my shoulder, her little pinafore covered body racked with sobs, "where's daddy, mam, I want a daddy hug" she sobbed.
"He's in heaven baby, in a better place." I told her, keeping my voice as calm as possible.
"When can I see him?" Her little voice asked, lifting her head so she could look in my eyes.
"Not for a long time, but I promise you will see him one day." I told her, comforting her gently.
"Ok," she sighed, I picked her up and carried her to the beaten up Nissan micra, strapping her into the frozen car seat in the front.
"I love you baby, daddy does too," I told her kissing her head, then walking back to the apartment to grab all of our stuff and lock it up.
Once I had done that, I started the car on the fifth try and drove Evie to school, holding her hand most of the way, wiping away a few remaining tears from her perfect cheeks.
Dropping her off went as smoothly as it can for us after a breakdown. I soon found myself walking back to my car, wondering how my life had come to this. I climbed into the old banger and stuck the key into the ignition turning it not hearing any sign of the engine starting. Sighing I turned it again, waiting for it to jump to life.
On the seventh try tears were streaming down my face, everything that could go wrong this morning had. I got out of the car and lifted the bonnet trying to recall what my dad had told me, having no such luck.
"Ugh" I said, sliding to the ground in frustration after trying everything, the tears still streaming down my face.
"You look like you could use some help." I heard someone say.
I jumped a little in surprise and looked up to see a kind looking man with curly brown hair and melted chocolate eyes, "sorry did I scare you?" He asked, offering me a hand, I took it and he easily pulled me up.
"Thank you ... sorry what is your name?" I questioned, not knowing his name.
"Oh sorry, it's Alex, I'm Bella's Dad," he told me, holding out his hand for me to shake.
"Well thank you Alex, I'm sorry everything's been going wrong this morning, I'm already running late because Evie had a breakdown and now this piece of shit won't start and I can't miss work because then I won't have enough for Evie's birthday present and she could really use it to cheer her up since her dad died" I rambled, not sure why I was telling Alex who I had seen on the playground once and literally spoken two like ten seconds before.
"I'm sorry for your loss, maybe I can make your day a bit better, why don't I give you a lift into your work and pick you up from work and we can get our girls together then maybe I can look at you car after school. You work in the library right?" He offered.
I looked at him once again and then said " yeah I do, thank you Alex, what will your partner think though, would they be okay with you giving me a lift?" I asked him.
"Who said anything about a partner?" Her said, reaching behind me to close the bonnet.
"Oh sorry, I just assumed, how stupid of me." I apologised, feeling embarrassed that I assumed.
"It's fine, sorry I don't think I caught your name." He told me, as he allowed me to grab my things from the back of the car.
"Perrie, Perrie Edwards, thank you for this again" I told him, inserting the key into the door to lock it, then carrying my stuff to Alex's BMW.
"It's no problem, Perrie, Perrie Edwards, now lets get you to work." He joked, opening the car door for me.
"Thank you, so where do you work then, I know you don't work in the library because I would've seen you, but you must work near the library to know that's where I work?" I asked him, as his car started perfectly and began driving towards the city centre.
"I work in a lawyer firm two doors down, I use the library a lot to reference laws, that's how I saw you. How long have you worked in the library?" He asked me, focused on the road ahead.
"Since last July, but I was off for about 6 months for compassionate leave, I only started back work last week, Evie stayed with her Nana, so I could do it." I explained to him, thinking back to when I found the job when Evie started school.
"Ah right, I presume you'll not be working much longer though, with the size of that bump," Alex commented, causing me to look down at my growing belly.
"I wish, but I'll have to work up to my due date to be able to earn enough money," I told him, running my hand along my bump, I was seven months pregnant, making everything much harder.
"You sound like an amazing mum anyway Perrie, I'm so sorry to hear your struggling, if there's anything I could do for you just say." He offered sweetly.
"This is more than enough Alex, honestly" I told him truthfully, thankful for everything he has already done for me.
"It's nothing Perrie, will your work be mad that your late?" He asked concerned.
"It'll be alright, they understand, after everything that has happened." I explained to him, feeling slightly unwell.
"Oh right, once again I'm sorry for you loss." He told me, reaching over to grab my hand in comfort.
"It's fine, it happens sometimes" I said, feeling more and more ill, "I'm so sorry Alex, would you be able to pull over, I'm not feeling too well?" I asked him, choking back the rising vomit.
"Yeah of course, hang on." He said worriedly, as he, tucked the car into a side lane. I threw open the car door, tumbled out and expelled all of the food I had eaten in the last twenty four hours out of my body. I heard the slam of a car door, the crunch of gravel and then a gently hand on my back, another taking my hair from my hand.
"I'm so sorry." I croaked, still gagging up bile.
"Oh nonsense it's fine," he shrugged it off still circling his hand on my back, "I'm not letting you go to work though Perrie, I'll drive you home, your in no state to work."
"I'm fine honestly, it's just the baby, I promise." I insisted, straightening up a little, feeling a pounding in my left temple. Wobbling a little, I felt Alex wrap his hands around me.
"Nope, you could do with the day off, now let me get you in the back of the car so you can rest." He told me, guiding me into the back of his car, I felt him lift me slightly, laying me down in the back of his car, moving the car seat.
"You'll be late to work Alex, they'll kill you, surely." I asked him, as he climbed back into the front of the car, after laying a blanket on me.
"I'm the owner, so it doesn't matter,no sleep and I'll drive you home." He said, my mind continued to protest but my body did not and soon I was falling asleep in the back of a car of a person that I met this morning.
*a few hours later*
I woke up in a really comfortable bed. This is definitely not my bed. I pealed open my eyes to be staring at a white wall. This is definitely not my wall. Slowly I sat up, seeing that I was still in my work clothes. That seemed to jog my memory because I remember Evie breaking down, the car breaking down, me breaking down, Alex stopping my breakdown, offering me a lift to work, throwing up on the side of the road and falling asleep. Carefully I got up and opened the door, stepping onto a large landing.
"Alex?" I croaked, my voice still hoarse from the events earlier on in th day.
"Oh you're awake, how are you feeling?" He asked me appearing at the bottom of the stairs, not dressed in his work attire any more.
"Better, how come I'm here?" I asked him, waking slowly down the stairs, struggling slightly because of the bump.
"I didn't know where you lived, so I just brought you here, I hope that's ok?" He asked me, offering me a hand for the last couple of steps.
"Thank you Alex, honestly you've been the most amazing person today. What about your job, you're still here? And did you call my work?" I asked him, panicked that I had kept him from his job whilst also loosing mine.
"Calm down Perrie, it's not good for the baby. Yes I called you work and they reassured me you'd be getting full sick pay and you could have tomorrow off if you were still ill. And, I've been working from home, I didn't want you to wake up alone." He told me. How sweet!
"Oh thank you Alex, what time is it?" I asked him, realising my phone wasn't on me.
"About 3, I was just coming to wake you up so we could pick up the girls." He told me.
"Okay, lets go then." I told him, walking with him to the front door so we could leave.
Once we were at school we stood together on the playground and waited for our girls, who, coincidentally, were holding hands.
"Hi mammy!" Evie said, letting go of Bella's hand and fprunning towards me trying to jump for a hug, but I stopped her before she could.
"Careful baby, don't forget about Brother." I told her, crouching down so I could hug her.
"Oh sorry." She said hugging me back, "mammy I made a friend!" She squealed, holding my face in her hands so she could look at me.
"You did?" I asked her eaqually excited.
"Yeah she's called Bella! Come on I'll show you!" She said taking my hand and pulling me over to Alex and Bella.
"See that's Evie and her mummy, daddy!" I heard Bella say, pulling Alex over to us.
"That's Bella mam! Can she come over to play?" She asked me, I looked up at Alex and smiled.
"Well actually, Alex is going to see if he can fix Mammy's car because it broke again, so maybe you and Bella can play while he does that, then we'll see ok?" I told her, Alex doing the same to Bella.
"Okay!" She said before turning to Bella, taking her hand and saying "come on Bella, let's play!" And off they went, to play on the pay set that the school had. Just as Alex and I were turning to leave to start on th car, I saw Evie's teacher coming up the playground.
"Ms Edwards?" She asked holding out her hand.
"Yes?" I replied back, shaking her hand wondering what this could be about.
"Your daughter Evie was very distressed this morning when we were talking about families, I was just hoping to see if everything was ok at home." She informed me, looking rather concerned.
"Ah, now let me ask you miss Laycock, if you have read Evie's file?" I asked her back feeling irritated at the seeming ignorance of this school.
"I'm afraid I have not, why?" She asked me.
"If you would have read it, then you would've found out that Evie's Dad, my husband, was killed in a car crash around 6 months ago and she was moved into you class to get away from a few children who were mean to her." I told her getting slightly more angry, feeling Alex place his hand on my back.
"I'm so sorry, I wasn't informed by any members of staff." She said, quietly.
"Im surprised by that but it was in her file, now if you don't mind me I ought to be going because my car's broken down." I told her before turning and leaving Alex following behind.
Once I was out of the school gates I broke down, tears began pouring down my face. My knees began to go weak but I felt a strong pair of hands grab me and guide me along to a bench, where they set me down. Without really thinking of what I was doing I turned into Alex's chest and cried my eyes out, feeling him hug me tightly.
"Shh, it's ok, just let it out Perrie, I've got you, Evie's not here." He reassured, rubbing my back.
"It's s-so h-ha-hard somet-t-times" I sobbed, feeling the material of his shirt get wet.
"I know, it'll get easier to cope with I promise, I was lime this after Claire." He said, which caused me to look up at him, my blue eyes meeting his brown.
"Th-thanks Alex, you've been amazing." I told him, feeling much calmer now.
"That's ok, now let's fix this old banger eh, you stay here and I'll start on it." He said standing up and walking over to my car, unlocking it using the key I had given to him.
Whilst I watched Alex work I began pondering names for my little boy. Despite having known he was a boy for about 3 months I still had no idea on a name. I know I want the middle name to be Zayn after my husband but I had no clue for a first name.
I began listing them off out loud "Luke Zayn. No. Oscar Zayn. Nope. Michael Zayn. No"
"How about Matthew Zayn?" I heard Alex suggest his face concentrated as he looked at the engine.
"Ooh I like it, Matthew Zayn and he can go for Matt for short. Thanks Alex!" I said, repeating it over in my head.
"No problem love, I'm afraid that this car is totalled." He informed me coming to sit back down next to me, his forehead dripping from sweat in the odd heat of September.
"Really? Oh bugger, yet another thing I'll have to buy. And how am I meant to get to school and work?" I fretted, not quite believing how bad my day had been.
"Chill, Bella and I will take you to school and work everyday till you get back on your feet and stuff." Alex reassured.
"Really?" I asked him in utter disbelief.
He nodded, saying "it's the least I can do."
"You really are my fairytale prince Alex." I said softly leaning up to kiss him gently. He kissed back, resting his hand on my face and the other on my back, his fingers tracing patterns up and down my spine.
"And you really are my damsel in distress" he joked after we pulled away.
