I had just settled down to watch some good old Simpsons when my door bell rang. How bizarre, I wasn't expecting anyone and it was raining so much outside that anyone out there is either crazy or they're in trouble.
I slowly stood up and walked to the door, opening it ever so slightly to see who was outside.
"Hello?" I called out through the gap, someone was definitely out there because I could see their shoes.
"Hi, I'm so sorry to bother you at such an hour but can you tell me where the homeless shelter is, I know it's around here somewhere" a young voice asked me, I instantly pulled the door open fully and was met by a woman my age stood on my doorstep. She was soaking wet and shivering but what surprised me the most was that she had a tiny baby rested on her hip who was also wet.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" I asked, extremely worried about them.
"Yeah just a bit cold but we'll be a bit warmer when we get to the shelter. If you could tell me where it is we'll be out your hair." She shivered, I felt so bad for her, I couldn't just let her go to a dingy place like the shelter.
"I've got room here if you like, you can stay here it's no trouble. It's just I read reports that the shelter will be closed down in a few days." I explained to her.
"No I can't possibly, just tell me where the shelter is and I'll be on my way." She asked again, pushing back some of her soaking wet hair.
"Please come in, you can go in the morning but please come in, I can't let you and your baby sleep in a damp cold shelter, please." I pleaded looking from the woman to her child and back at the woman.
"Fine, but I'll have to repay you somehow." She gave in. I smiled and stepped aside, showing her into my house.
"What's your name by the way, I'm Leigh-Anne." I told her, moving into the living room which was warm an toasty compared to the hall.
"I'm Jade, thank you so much Leigh-Anne." She-Jade- told me, standing awkwardly in the corner of the room.
"It's no problem, what's the cutie called and how old is she?" I asked, gesturing to the little baby.
"Elouisa, but she mostly goes by El or Lou and she's four months old next week" Jade explained, her's and El's lips slowly turning back from blue to pink.
"Well she's cute as a button, now I'm afraid I don't have anything for the little'n to wear other than blankets and t-shirts but I'm sure that'll be fine, I have some nappies from when my nephew stays, they might be a bit big but it shouldn't matter. As for you my dear, you can wear some of my clothes if you want they may be a bit big but it doesn't matter." I rambled, going along the hall to the guest room first for the stuff for Elouisa then to my room for the stuff for Jade. Meanwhile Jade was just following me silently. "The bathroom is next door, run yourself a nice hot bath, there's spare towels in the cabinet and I'll leave your clothes on the bed in the guest room. I'll take the baba too and sort her out, now you relax okay." I instructed, pushing her into the bathroom, after I had grabbed a towel and the baby soap for El. I took her and went into the kitchen, bouncing her on my hip the whole way. Once I had filled the sink with lukewarm water and lots of bubbles I placed the infant in slowly after undressing her, letting her body get used to the temperature change.
"Is that nice?" I cooed, earning a gummy smile from her.
I washed her body fist with a wash cloth then proceeded to wash her hair after that, coating every strand. After that was done I withdrew her and wrapped her in a fluffy towel, carrying her and the stuff I had found for her into the living room. Carefully I put a nappy back on her and then slid one of my older nephew's t-shirts onto her. It was far to big for her but would keep her warm enough until the morning where I could go and get some actual stuff for her. After that I wrapped her in a blanket and rocked her back and forth although I could tell she was hungry, her mouth searching for a food source. I hope Jade breastfeeds.
After a while I stood up and went over to the bathroom door, lightly knocking on it, "are you okay in there?" I asked pressing my ear to the door.
"Y-ye-yeah" I heard Jade hiccup, indicating she had been crying.
"No you're not love, are you decent?" I questioned.
"Y-ye-yeah." She repeated and so I slowly opened the door, revealing a very teary Jade wrapped in a towel sat on the lid of the toilet, "Oh poor thing, what's wrong hun?" I cooed, walking over to her and drawing her into a hug, careful of Elouisa.
"I-I'm j-just so over-overwhelmed" she cried, tears falling from her pretty brown eyes.
"Bless you, well why don't you feed El then we can have a chat about it if you want." I suggested, squeezing her side. She nodded and took El off me, walking into the guest room. I sighed then walked to the cupboard in the hall, opening it to try and see if I still had the pack-and-play from when Kailum was little. To my relief I did, so I pulled it out and carried it back down the hall to the guest room that had the door closed. "Jay, I've got a cot here for El if you want it." I told her through the cheep door.
"If it's okay with you I think I'll just have her sleep with me." Jade called back through.
"Yeah that's fine babe, it was just in case." I said, carrying the cot back to the cupboard.
"You can come in if you want Leigh-Anne, I'm feeding her and could use some company." Jade said through the door, so I opened it up and walked in. I sat next to her on the bed and watched El's feet scrunch and un-scrunch as she ate.
"How old are you?" I asked adding "if you don't mind me asking"
"Of course not, I just turned 19 couple months ago" Jade told me, not looking away from El.
"Cool, wow I thought you were older, I turned 22 just in October." I explained truthfully.
"Yeah I get that a lot, don't worry. I'm pretty sure half of its because of El and the other half is that I'm an old soul and it makes me seem older." Jade explained, her hand stroking El's hair gently.
"Ah I see, so you were 18 when you had El, that must have been scary." I said, awing inside at El's big brown eyes staring into her mum's, her hand reaching for Jade's damp hair.
"Yeah it was, I'm still so embarrassed when I go somewhere and have to give my age to someone a lot older because there's instant judgement that comes with it. Heck there's even judgement from the people in the homeless shelter where there's meant to be no judging at all." Jade said half sad half angry, as she adjusted a sleepy El a little more.
"Well I'm not judging you at all, it's your life and your choice and she's absolutely beautiful, seriously Jade she's gorgeous, as are you." I reassured, patting Jade's leg, as some tears fell from her eyes, "awe hun, what's up, I'm sorry if I said something to upset you?" I said, worried I'd just mucked up everything I had offered to her.
"No it's not you, it's just your so kind and sweet and almost everyone I talk to has something nasty to say about El or the fact that I'm homeless. I'm just great full that I knocked on your door and not someone else's." She explained still crying.
"It's my pleasure honestly Jade you're such a sweet person and like I said it's no trouble." I told her, hugging her side tightly.
"Well thanks, it looks like missus is done so I best burp her, get her to bed and stop being all mopey and sad." She chuckled, lifting up El so she was perched on her shoulder over a towel. Patting her back she stood up and walked to the side of the bed, pulling back the covers.
"I'll grab the lights," I stated walking over and turning the dimmer dial down so there was enough light in the room for Jade to see but Elouisa to settle. I watched slightly in awe as Jade laid El down in the middle and stroked her head no more than twice and she was out for the count. Jade kissed her head before placing a pillow next to her so if she rolled it would be okay.
"Night Princess," she whispered, walking over to where I was stood.
"Ready to chill then?" I asked her, once her slim form had reached me.
"Yeah, thanks again Leigh, it's really wonderful of you to take us in," Jade repeated, as we walked away from the open door to the living room.
"Its absolutely no trouble hun," I reassured, when we sat down I passed her a drink I had poured for her and grabbed mine as well. "So what do you wanna talk about?"
"You," she said quickly which made me chuckle.
"Me?" I questioned looking into her beautiful brown, melted pools of chocolate eyes.
"Yeah, like what your story is and your life and stuff." Jade elaborated, after sipping at the drink.
"Oh, okay, well I was born in High-Wycombe and basically grew up there until my mum sent me away to stay with my Grandma when I came out as gay. Grandma was old and so I had to look after her, she lived in this big house with lots of land and horses. There was a girl there who used to have a half share in one of the horses called Perrie. We became friends and when my grandma passed away I moved into her house with her mam. The house went to my parents who immediately sold it and the horses got taken away to various trainers and riding schools. When we turned 18 we got a shared flat in Newcastle and I went to uni and she worked in a salon. We lived together until a few months ago when our lease was up on our old place and she moved in with her boyfriend. She's lovely you'd like her. My sisters comes to visit every so often, hence the baby stuff. Life's pretty good. I've got a steady job in a therapy place for children where I work 3 full days and two afternoons. The only thing is my parents don't talk to me any more." I finished sadly, looking down in embarrassment at being disowned by my parents.
"I'm sorry to hear, I wondered why you were in Newcastle. Well if my word counts for anything, I think you're a lovely person and being gay doesn't change a thing." She said sweetly, resting her hand on my leg sending warm shivers up it. Strange.
"Thanks Jade. So tell me about you then. If you want that is." I asked, smiling sweetly.
"No I'll tell you, it's the least I can do considering you let me in." Jade said, before she took a deep breath and began to tell me about her. I found out that she was kicked out as well for being bi, so she stayed with her friends for a while. Then one day she was out in a club and someone drugged her and raped her. When she went to her family for support they shunned her even more for being pregnant. She didn't have an abortion because she couldn't bring herself to do it. She was still staying at friend's houses and stuff but people were beginning to move and go to uni so she had no where to stay. She had a small job in Shields which is where she is from which was enough to get her a small hotel room and save a little bit for when El was born. But she had to stop working when she got pneumonia whilst she had El. She almost died apparently. After that she has just been going from shelter to shelter with El and waiting until she's old enough that she can get a job again.
Whilst she was telling me this I was heartbroken for her. Imagining her being kicked out and shunned for being bi and getting raped. I couldn't help but feel so sorry for her.
After our heart to heart we watched Harry Potter and not even half was through she had fallen asleep, curled into me.
As I watched her tiny form sleep my mind spiraled into a frenzy of imagination. I pictured her living here with me. Us falling in love as we bathed El, kissing over a sink full of bubbles. Getting married, adopting more kids who were like us and living a happy ever after we both deserved, especially her.
So that settled it, as the end credits were rolling I was falling deeper and deeper in love with the homeless girl and the tiny baby.
