Hi baby" I said, kissing her as she came through the door to our apartment, looking exhausted after a long day of work.
"Hi love" she replied, when we pulled away, into my pyjama covered chest.
"Good day?" I questioned, moving us to sit on the couch, her on my lap.
"It was alright, the kids are just so tired and emotional because it's the end of school so there were a lot of time outs and discussions." She explained, yawning and moving so her head was in my lap.
"Sorry to hear babe, they're a good class though." I reasoned, stroking her gorgeous blonde hair, that I could tell had been pulled out of a bun recently.
"Yeah, they're all just recovering from the news about Charlie, it's gonna take some time. It is for me." She sighed, a tear falling from the edge of her eye, which I leant down and kissed away.
"It's gonna take some time princess, there's gonna be ups and downs. But you'll get through it together. Is there any news on the funeral?" I asked, swiping away a few more tears from her eyes.
"Yeah, his mum came in today after school and invited me to it next Thursday. They said the cause of death was cardiomyopathy, large heart muscle. I just can't quite believe he's gone." She told me, pushing away a few more tears.
"It's good they know why sweetheart, they can help his sister if she has it. So are the kids dealing with it in a bad way?" I said, squeezing her hands.
"Kinda, they're only 6 so the concept of him being gone forever doesn't really sink in. Plus a lot of them are traumatised from seeing him collapse. I'm planning a day off type thing for them tomorrow. We've got councillors coming in to talk to them abut it properly, them they're going to chat to a few kids who were pretty close to him, in a physical and emotional sense. Then we're going to write a letter to his mam. Then after that if they've been good we'll do some fun games." She explained to me, her eyes lighting up, as always when she's talking about plans for the kids.
"Yeah, they need it don't they?" I agreed, yawning as well.
"Yeah, I love them to death." She whispered back, sombrely.
"I know you do, shall we have some dinner, I tried to make a pasta." I told he, thinking of my shoddy attempt at cooking.
"Okay then," she whispered back, sitting up and kissing me. I stood up and offered her my hand, pulling her up with me and walking to the kitchen.
"Here you are ma love" I said, placing the bowl of pasta in front of her on the tiny table we had.
"Thank you Jes, how was your day anyway?" She asked me, meeting our hands under the table.
"It was alright actually, I was in benbrook this morning doing some voice and dance lessons then I took a class at piper hill with the year 9s and we did adaptive dance it was really good." I told her, thinking back to my fairly calm day.
"Cool, piper hill is the special needs school right?" She asked, spooning a pile of bland spaghetti into her mouth.
"Yep, they're so sweet. There was a girl called Lilia who has severe learning difficulties and when I put the music on her face just lit up and she started dancing. Possibly the highlight of my day, that and seeing you of course" I said, leaning to kiss her lips.
"How smooth miss Nelson." She chuckled, moving her head forward again to kiss me.
"Why thank you!" I exclaimed, eating a few more pieces of pasta.
"Jesy?" She asked after a couple of minutes of silence.
"Angel?"
"You'll come to Charlie's funeral won't you? I don't think I could go alone." She said, staring into my eyes, her's full of sorrow and longing.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world sweet, he was one for my students too." I soothed, bringing her into my side.
"Thank you" she croaked, burying her face into what effectively was my boob.
"Of course, you finished?" I questioned, stroking her hair.
"Uh-huh, thanks Jes, it was lovely." She told me, fiddling with my fingers.
"No problem baby, what do you want to do now? Watch TV or go to bed and cuddle?" I quizzed, taking the plates off the table.
"Both" she replied, a twinkle in the corner of her already sparkly blue eyes.
"Fine!" I said, picking her up and throwing her over my shoulder carrying her to our room, plonking her in the bed.
"Can we watch tangled pleeeeese" she whined from the bed, as I set the laptop up.
"Urgh, I guess." I sighed, selecting it and climbing in next to her, letting her tiny body curl into me, as the beginning credits started.
By twenty minutes in she had passed out and was snoring lightly. I put her pyjamas on, kissed her head and then got changed myself. After that I crawled in next to her, taking her into my arms, whispering "goodnight", hoping that there'd be less nightmares tonight.
