"Teddy, can you ask the nurse when we get to see him again?" I asked quietly, my voice a bit scratchy from the many hours of labour I've been through. Ed just smiled and sat down next to me, being careful not to move the bed around too much and hurt my aching body.
"I think you should try and get some rest now, Darling. You must be really tired," he said and gently pushed my hair, which was still slightly sweaty, from my face. I shook my head no although it was a lie. Actually, I was dead tired and pretty exhausted but I hadn't seen our baby since they had taken him away nearly an hour ago.
"I just want to hold him and spend time with him," I whined. "They took him away so fast, I hadn't even had the chance to look at him properly."
"I know, I want to see him, too, but we'll have plenty of time with him once we're at home."
"But what if he needs me now? I want to make sure that he's okay!" I used my elbows and tried to sit up but Ed quickly stopped me by putting his hands on my shoulders, helping me to lie back down.
"Alice, he's okay, believe me. He's probably sleeping now," he explained soothingly, keeping his hands on my shoulders.
"You think so?" I asked desperately. Two hours after birth and I could tell that my mommy instincts were already kicking in.
"Yeah, don't worry," he told me before lifting up the white blanket that was covering my body. "Can I lie with you? Or do you want some space? I don't want to hurt you or anything."
I scooted over a bit to make some room for him on the rather small hospital bed and patted the spot next to, inviting him to lie with me. He smiled and quickly kicked off his shoes before getting under the covers with me, doing his best to keep the mattress from moving too much. He gently curled up at my left side and I turned my head to look at him, his tired blue eyes meeting my brown ones.
His face was so close to mine, close enough for our noses to touch. I reached up to tangle my hand in his soft orange hair, slowly combing my fingers trough it. He sighed and let his forehead rest against mine."Tired?" I asked, smirking.
He just nodded and lazily lifted his hand to put it on my cheek, using his thumb to caress my skin.
"Wasn't I the one who went through 12 hours of labour? You have no right to be tired, Edward," I teased and playfully pulled his hair.
"Hey, I was the one who had to deal with you shouting at me the whole night and blaming me for getting you pregnant!" he pouted. "I was the real victim."
"Aw, I'm sorry, baby," I laughed and patted his head before getting serious again. "I still can't believe we have a baby. We're parents, Ed."
Ed's face went soft and he placed his hand behind my head to pull me close, his lips hovering over mine. "We're a family now, Alice," he smiled
and pecked my lips twice before craddling me against his chest. "That's why we should take a family nap now.""Alright," I sighed and yawned loudly, closing my eyes. I was damn tired.
"Alright, sleep well, Honey," Ed whispered and planted a final kiss on top of my head. I wanted to answer but I was already peacefully drifting off to sleep.
-------------------------
I was the first one to wake up at a faint knock on our door. I lifted my head from Ed's warm chest as a nurse entered the room, wearing a kind smile on her face. "How are you feeling?" she asked. "You two have been asleep for nearly four hours."
"I'm fine," I answered slowly, feeling a bit drowsy from sleep. However, all my fatigue was gone once my eyes fell on the small bundle of tiny blue blankets the nurse was carrying. My eyes widened and I quickly sat up, wincing a bit at the sharp pain. I put my hand on Ed's shoulder and shook him awake, earning myself an unhappy groan from him. "Ed, Ed, wake up! Look who's here," I said excitedly.
"What?" Ed mumbled and sat up, rubbing his tired eyes while scanning the room in confusion before he seemed to remember that we were still at the hospital. His fatigue disappeared as fast as mine once he spotted our baby in the nurse's arms. "Oh, look who's back!" he cheered and clapped his hands together.
I reached out my arms for our little baby boy, beaming with excitement.
The nurse laughed and walked over to the bed. "It's time for Baby Sheeran to finally meet his mum and dad." She stepped forward and gently placed the new member of our family into my waiting arms. "I'll be back in a few minutes," she informed us before turning around and closing the door behind her to give the three of us some time alone.
I looked down at the baby boy I had sheltered for the past nine months. He was awake and his big blue eyes, which were already reminding me so much of Ed's, were examining my face in curiousity. "Hey, Sweetheart. How are you doing?" I whispered. "It's your mommy. I'm so happy you're finally here."
"Look at him," Ed said softly. "He's so beautiful." I turned my head and caught him staring at the newborn in awe. "Please, can I hold him now?" he asked, almost begging as he held out his hands, the biggest smile plastered over his face.
I nodded and fixed the blue blanket before carefully handing him over to his father for the very first time. He began to whine a bit but stopped once Ed took him in his arms, cradling him against the comforting warmth of his chest.
"Hey, little guy. It's your daddy," he cooed and used the tip of his pointer finger to touch the baby's tiny nose. "It's so nice to meet you."
I watched him, tears of happiness prickling in my eyes as he lowered his head to press a soft kiss to his son's forehead. "Daddy's got you." I'd been waiting nine months for this very moment and I wished it would just last forever. I knew how much Ed loved kids and that starting his own family was one of his biggest dreams in life.
"Hold on, we still haven't named him yet," Ed suddenly noticed, bringing me back to reality.
"Oh yeah, you're right." I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering how it was possible to forget such an important thing. Silence filled the room as we both tried to think of a good name for the new member of the Sheeran family. "What do you think about Alec?" I asked.
"Eww, no," Ed cringed. "Haven't you watched any high school movies yet? The bad boy's always named Alec. I think Ben would be a great name."
I rolled my eyes at him and shook my head. "Come on, Ed. Ben is such a basic name. Everyone's name is Ben. Be a bit more creative."
Ed glared at me before drawing his attention back to the baby in his arms. "You look like a Ben, don't you? I know you do."
"No, he doesn't. I think he actually looks like a Jeffrey." I suggested.
"Are you crazy? Jeffrey? What a douchbag name!"
Fine, you smart ass," I pouted and crossed my arms in front of my chest. "Then not."
There was silence again as we both thought of every possible name that came to our mind that would suit our baby boy. Adam, Jack, Evan, Jasper...
"Charlie!" Ed interrupted my thoughts. "Don't you think he looks like a Charlie?"
Charlie. Ed was right, he somehow looked like a Charlie. Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. I liked how it sounded. "I really like that name," I said.
"Yeah?"
I nodded my head and shiffted closer to Ed. I wrapped my arms around his waist and squeezed him tightly. "It's a lovely name, Teddy. It suits him."
Ed smiled at me before looking back down at the little wonder in his arms.
"Welcome to the family, Charlie boy."
